I enjoyed reading this article, as well as, all the comments that followed.

I went to an Anna Maria game a couple of years ago. There is a very small tailgating area, but it is raised over the stadium behind one end zone. You can get a perfectly good end zone "seating" without ever leaving the tailgate

Good article. Happy for both schools, although when NU dropped football HC lost it's Patsy and the opponents who have moved up from D-2 to replace the Huskies have been surprisingly harder to beat.
Anna Maria played Dean College in the article. A former women's college and a former junior college. Both adapting to a changing world. HC...
Another article posted to Crossports recently noted UMass (Amherst) has zoomed upward in the USNWR rankings and this article notes Northeastern has zoomed upward in the USNWR rankings. HC...
I'll take HC over UMass, NU, Anna Maria or Dean but we are in tough lane to zoom up in the rankings. The August Institutions ahead of us won't let us play through voluntarily.

I find the Northeastern comments more PR than real life--it's not like someone would say "that was the worst decision we've made in years." As for rankings, well, they've been called out for it. www.bostonmagazine.com/news/2014/08/26/how-northeastern-gamed-the-college-rankings/Football at NU was always a dicey proposition given their facilities, but there is still no excuse why Boston U continues to avoid the sport. Is the ghost of John Silber really going to wreak havoc on the BU trustees if they joined PL football?

Can anyone cut and paste? I let my subscription to the Old Grey Lady slide.
I don't think NU dropping football contributed to its rise that much....many other factors at play.
Hard to see BU bringing football back...never a "football school " to begin with...I doubt any clamor for it exists now.

BU - PL football, not a good fit in the opinion of the BU decision makers. What do they know? LoveHC ? BU football was gone 15 years before the Terriers joined the PL.

Thanks for sharing that article--it confirms much of what I and others have been saying for years" many schools lie to USN &WR and some game the formula. Full disclosure--I have an MBA from NU

(more appropriate that I post this here versus where I already did)
I'll give NU credit for finally figuring out that the program was dead on arrival at Parsons Field (two miles from campus, no parking or easy public transportation access, not even in the top 10 HIGH SCHOOL stadia in Mass., let alone college) and needing 25 million to construct something acceptable.
Of course, they probably should have built something on campus anyway ...it doesn't do anything for their other outdoor programs to play at that place (and their field hockey team plays in 8-10 mile away Dedham, for goodness sakes).

Personally, I don't think football was adding anything to Northeastern or represented a significant potion of their identity so pulling the plug was a good idea. Northeastern's rise to prominence had much to do with location, course offerings, and smart marketing.

During the good old days some on this board had the opportunity to play against BUs Reggie Rucker and Bruce Taylor, two exceptional talents and professionals

Hard to see BU bringing football back...never a "football school " to begin with...I doubt any clamor for it exists now. Pretty certain it's Gray Lady or Old Lady but not Old Grey Lady. Old Gray Lady it is to many: "Here's the opening paragraph of a 1951 Life article entitled "The Gray Lady Reaches 100": The Old Gray Lady will celebrate her 100th birthday this Sept. 18. The "lady" is a newspaper -- the New York Times -- regarded by many in the world at large (and all within its own world) as the world's greatest. And newsmen generally hail it as "old" and "gray" by way of acknowledging its traditional special marks: starch conservatism and circumspection. So, at least in 1951, the nickname needed explicit explanation to a lay (i.e.: non-journalist) audience. posted by mhum at 11:21 PM on February 2, 2012

But BU has an Alzheimer's Disease and CTE center, and they are a leader in studying the dangers of football.

I am not sure where they got "conservatism" and "circumspection." The articles about "the old gray lady" were mostly in Life magazine in the early 1950s.
