Unlike our overall rebounding % which has improved considerably from last year, our % of points per game from free throws remains among the worst in the country. It’s virtually identical to last year’s 12.8 at 12.9. There isn’t a great disparity in field goals and 3 pointers attempted per game between us and our opponents but the latter has attempted 110 more free throws per game. I didn’t check on the number of fouls per game we commit vs them but my guess is it’s not a huge disparity. One guess is we foul opponent’s two point shots way more than they foul ours. Whatever the cause is, it is really hurting us.

A troubling stat and trend.
With the exception of Pridgen, no one on the roster is averaging more than two free throw attempts per game.
We rank 339th in the country in percentage of points coming at the line.

In fact there is a huge disparity between HC and our opponents in the number of fouls committed: 282 by HC versus only 195 by our opponents.

Lost count of how many "and 1s" Kostecka had (I know, I know, for me, that could be after 2). And my gut observation is that there were lots of HC fouls on missed shots resulting in 2 opponent free throws. My same "gut" tells me that we have cut down on fouling 3 point shooters. Still do it but a lot fewer than under the Carmody regime. We also seem to get the opponents into the bonus situation very quickly into each half.

HC must have a really deep bench! 😁

Here is where HC has ranked over the past five seasons in the ratio of FT's to FGA's: 2019-20: 341st 2018-19: 340th 2017-18: 284th 2016-17: 204th 2015-16: 188th This year the ratio of FT's to FGA's is .237. In Carmody's first year it was .361.

We are also taking a higher portion of our FGAs from deep.
Agree, it's very disappointing.

I love players who can get to the line and then convert their free throws. Through KenPom, I know of two measures for getting to the line (or for getting fouled): (1) WooGray showcases Joe Pridgen's "Free Throw Rate" which is the straightforward calculation he cites above (FTA/FGA). I guess it could be a tiny bit imprecise in that I don't think it makes any allowance for a player missing the first half of a 1 &1. Per Ken Pom :"This measures a player’s ability to get to the line relative to how often he attempts to score." Joe Pridgen's number is by far the best on the team. On this measure the best in recent memory has to be the extraordinary 82.3% that Anthony Thompson posted in his great freshman season. For perspective, Zach Thomas of Bucknell, who lived at the foul line, had a Free Throw Rate of 69.5% his senior year when he took 310 free throws. A second measure is "Fouls Drawn per 40 Minutes". With KenPom this is a more arcane calculation with a number of assumptions. On this calculation Joe P is at 4.4/40 minutes season to date, a very good number. The season is ongoing and we don't know where Joe will end up, but we've not had a number that high in a few years. Here are some of HC's higher numbers available on KenPom's website, which starts at 2001-2002. 2002= Whearty 5.5, Szatko 4.7 2003= Whearty 4.8, Szatko 4.4 2004= Thomas 4.5, Lufkin 4.5 2006= Hamilton 6.12007= Thomas 5.3, Simmons 5.2 2008= May 5.5, Clifford 4.8 2009= Brown 5.5, Evans 4.7 2010= Evans 6.4, Brown 4.7 2011= Keister 5.6, Brown 5.0 2012= Brown 4.8 2013= Dudzinski 4.9 2014= Thompson 5.1, Dudzinski 5.0, Alexander 4.8 2015= Miller 4.7 2016= Charles 5.1 2017= Charles 4.5

If Pridgen improves his foot speed potentially he canl be a poor man’s version of Adrian Dantley if not more

If Pridgen improves his foot speed potentially he canl be a poor man’s version of Adrian Dantley if not more Wow! I still remember vividly the HC-Notre Dame game when Dantley took something like 25 free throws-absolutely unstoppable underneath the basket, augmented by helpful refs, of course.

Our bigs don't power to the rim, they shy away from contact..So they don't draw many freebies..

Reputation matters and if he can be known for attacking inside he will get more and more calls coached Adrian’s sonCameron-good in hoops and great instincts as a QB-played FB for Syracuse

Four of the bottom 12 teams in the country in terms of free throws attempted per game are from the PL. Colgate is next to last at 352 with 10.5 per game. HC checked in at 342. Lehigh and Lafayette are between those two.

KyCrusader75 Was at the ‘75 game that you reference and agree that there was some serious “augmentation” going on-so much so that George Blaney was tossed from the game for the only time in his 22 yrs. as head coach. The reffing was so one-sided by about the 10 minute mark of the second half that even the ND faithful became hushed and uncomfortable. From that point on, things were more balanced and HC got back in the game, eventually leading by 1 or 2 with a couple minutes left and losing 96-91. First HC game that I was able to attend in 4 yrs. because of post graduate studies, marriage, young family and distance from Worcester but I can honestly say that in my 54 yrs. of HC fandom, I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of the effort of an HC hoop team, considering the opponent, the hostile environment and the level of aggression that HC brought to the game. The early stages of the Potter/Vicens era and night and day in terms of aggressiveness from ‘66-‘70.
Hopefully, under HCBN, we’ll see a similar “transformation” in the near future.

Colgate is getting 5+ fewer FTAs than last year, and Lehigh nearly 9 fewer.

Interesting with Lehigh, obviously they're a much less talented team this year but they are taking 6 less 3's per game which would seem to indicate they're going inside more which theoretically should lead to more free throws. Anyone know why Nic Lynch their 7 ft sophomore center is not playing this year?

Playing with the lead late provides more opportunities... true, but generally only in close games. not sure how much that has affected our atrocious rate this year, as many of our margins of defeat have not even been in fouling to extend the game territory.

We attempted 6 free throws last night and made 5. Right now, we are averaging 8.5 points per game from the charity stripe. Only 5 teams in the country average less than us. I believe only 8 or 9 teams attempt fewer free throws per game than us. This has got to improve.
