I don't think very many drivers would be looking down in the midst of making a sharp 90 degree turn onto another highway, particularly when crossing three lanes of northbound traffic. So I give little/no credence to the other driver's comment. It was hard to see from the photos whether the other driver braked at all, and one couldn't tell what lane he was in . I think the natural reaction if a vehicle was suddenly crossing in front of you from your left to right, would be to turn toward the rear of the crossing vehicle. i worked many years with motor vehicle accident recon specialists. a good accident recon specialist will probably accurately reconstruct this tragic accident. comments here are just idle amateur speculation and should be avoided and ignored.

I certainly respect your legal experience and years in the industry. And, I agree, that recon specialists will be able to determine what happened with near 100% accuracy.
Based on my 28 years investigating or supervising accident investigations and also having worked with recon specialists (before you and I met at the nice little place in SF when I was serving the industry in a different capacity), I don't think I would qualify as an "amateur" in this field. [we had an expression: "I forgot more than you'll ever know."]
I would also state that whether the players had health insurance (would be shocked if they did not), this would not be an issue as the injuries sustained were caused by negligence on the part of someone and there would be legitimate claims for pain and suffering and in Grace Rett's situation, death. Any payment by a health insurer would likely try to subrogate against the auto insurers involved (i.e. get the money that they paid out back from the auto insurer).
Due to liability issues, it is potentially very ugly but it also sounds like Holy Cross is doing its very best to show caring and concern for the students.

(btw, i did make one earlier brief comment on the accident which i regret and apologize for.)

By process of elimination, it's pretty clear Ms. Comcowich is the only student still hospitalized in Florida.
The reports say she's had at least one surgery and will have more. I'm hoping and praying she's well enough soon to get moved and not have to endure this ordeal so far from home.

Just watched the tape of the BU-HC basketball game (yech!) but saw the patch on the men's uniforms for the women's rowing team. This hurt will last a long time on campus and for anyone who cares about Holy Cross and her student-athletes.

Would HC have a large umbrella type liability policy that would extend auto, fire, and all other types of primary coverage? There must be planning for a fire or explosion in a dorm or a packed ballroom or arena that could generate huge claims.

Would HC have a large umbrella type liability policy that would extend auto, fire, and all other types of primary coverage? There must be planning for a fire or explosion in a dorm or a packed ballroom or arena that could generate huge claims. I am certain the HC has a policy that provides comprehensive liability coverage, though perhaps not coverage for "huge claims". The likelihood of huge claims arising from incidents such as those described is minutely small, given the various fire safety measures that are in place. The high pressure gas pipeline goes under the playing fields, not under Luth, and the pipeline company would be the primary insurer. The Federal Clery Act requires all colleges and universities to report annually on fire prevention, fire safety, and fire incidents. www.holycross.edu/sites/default/files/files/publicsafety/2018annual_security_and_firesafety_reports.pdfSee pdf p. 55 in the above report in which HC lists every residence hall as having full sprinklers. In the fire incidents table, there was one fire in Mulledy that caused $11,000 dollars in damage. Cause of the fire was an overheating item catching bedding on fire.

Today’s T&G has an article on the intersection where the accident occurred Paywall Excerpts: By Lamaur Stancil, TCPalm.com From the description of the lights, the green arrow light for a left turn from the southbound lane onto the bridge operates for a minute, with a red light stopping northbound traffic. When the green arrow light goes dark, both northbound lanes and southbound lanes then have green lights. When both northbound and southbound traffic have a green light, southbound traffic still seeking to turn left onto the bridge is to yield to northbound traffic, with a posted sign to that effect.

If I am reading all this correctly, this is not unlike many intersections that have a green left turn arrow and when it goes off, a solid green goes into effect that commands cars heading in both directions with the expectation (and general MV&TLs rules) that any car turning left must yield to oncoming traffic (with signs often stating that what should be obvious).
Simple solution would be to still have the left turn green arrow light (or no one would make it safely through the turn); ditch the solid green light in that direction for the left turn lane; AND install a big sign saying something to the effect "LEFT TURN WITH GREEN ARROW ONLY." Essentially eliminating a straight green for making a left turn under any circumstances.

Assuming there wasn't a typo, 25 million cars through that intersection in 2017 is nearly 70,000 cars a day, or more than twice the daily volume of Worcester's infamous Kelley Square. IMO, the signal system at the Florida intersection is primitive, and not designed for that traffic load and speed.
