Re Al McGuire: Unfortunately, we've had a few Dunkirks this year. And, for an impending season ending tournament loss: "get out the golf clubs".
Also, one about BYU's kids who returned from Mormon missions: "These missions really help with the redshirting". Probably would result in a bunch of warnings and apologies these days.

There was an interesting moment in the second half of yesterday's game when Army stole the ball and Pridgen was the only defender back and forced Funk to miss the initial shot but an Army player was there along with a few other Cadets to lay in the rebound. There were no HC players anywhere close to the hoop and Pridgen was very upset and appeared to be questioning teammates as to why no one else had gotten back. Nelson called an immediate timeout after this play.

Reilly as well. In some ways tougher for him as he's not seeing any minutes, plus it may well be that none of us will see the progress he makes for a while. But, it's better for him (even if he ends up elsewhere) AND the team if he improves.

Pridgen is the only HC player running hard back on defense. Scroll ahead (1:35:23 on the tape)

Saw that play and certainly understand his frustration

The time out was important and the coach seems to have made the poor hustle into a "teachable moment."

After the timeout, Verbeek was pulled.
Lest anybody be tempted to excuse this play as a result of normal fatigue (because of the short bench), it's worth pointing out that only one Holy Cross player went all 40 minutes yesterday - Joe Pridgen.

That 40 minutes...and the way he played it with such intensity...was quite an "ironman" stint. I was impressed.

Not basketball-related, but memorable in terms of "maximum effort" was that given some years ago by Ben Watson. I don't think Nelson expects this necessarily, but as a model for how to behave in a game, you could do worse. Maybe the greatest play I've ever seen, in any sport.

I will guess you want him to recruit a couple of "Bigs". I thought they were referred to as 6'12" guys here.

While I too appreciate the hustle and "don't quit" attitude of many if not all of the players on the team, in the face of a very tough season... I don't think it's necessarily praiseworthy. It reminds me of a great skit Chris Rock did a long time ago, where I can't type all of the foul language on this particular board, but the premise was people wanting credit for things they're supposed to do. You are a scholarship, D1 athlete. Hustle should be the least of our concerns.
Defending without fouling out, putting the ball in the hoop, and things like that should be where we are picking nits-- the things truly contributing to the Ws and Ls lately.

Honestly, “hustling” and “not quitting” really shouldn’t be commended. This is Division I basketball. These are qualities that are simply expected of any player when he/she is on the floor.

Well, might be expected, but not everybody does it.

If it's not fatigue, what exactly is happening in the last 2-3 minutes of the half? Seems to be a pattern.

Well, might be expected, but not everybody does it. Exactly, especially when the losses pile up. "Mental" energy can flag just as physical can. For coaches, too. And for fans, for that matter.

That was the time to remember, cause it would not last forever. These were the days to hold on to, cause we won't although we'll want to. This was the time, but time is gonna change. I know we've got to move somehow, but I don't want to lose Holy Cross basketball now.

I knew that, hence the smiley face. Just trying to maintain my board lead in cheap, unsolicited shots
By the way, I liked both musical references.
