Correct 1955,Feb. He led Syracuse to a close win over the very strong Heinsohn- Liebler team, # 14 nationally October. 256 (not a typo)all purpose yards, inc punt and kick off returns. Some things I just found out out JImmy(as The Crusader called him) Brown . At Manhasset HS he won 13 letters inc baseball where he pitched two no hitters At Syracuse, where he entered WITHOUT a scholarship (10 letters in 4 sports)one May Day in 1957 at an AAU track meet and he won the high jump and javelin, and placed second in the discus, Then played his usual dominant self in a lacrosse win. in 1954 he finished 5th in the decathlon in an AAU meet In football he sometimes played both ways and frequently kicked extra points He boxed on the side and the Syracuse coach said he thought Brown could be the national champion. in lax he was so dominant that one rule was changed because of his exploits.

Didn't realize Brown was such an accomplished basketball player averaged 13 points and was referred to as a tenacious rebounder. Only played sophomore and junior seasons, reason he didn't play as a senior is incredible apparently Syracuse had an unwritten rule that no more than two blacks could be in the starting lineup since there were already two star black players starting Brown decided not to play. Interestingly the team without Brown went to the Elite 8, wonder if they could have gone further if he played. Brown could be the greatest athlete of all time, he's still the best football player I've ever watched.

Greatest athlete contenders would certainly be a small group, but some might see Wilt Chamberlain as giving him a run for that title.

Greatest athlete contenders would certainly be a small group, but some might see Wilt Chamberlain as giving him a run for that title. Chamberlain was also a great track and field athlete, and probably would have excelled in other sports, but Brown actually DID excel in many sports. That is why I believe Brown is the GAOAT

I'm sure y'all remember when he played for Cleveland that every time he got up off the ground after his run he would walk slowly back to the huddle like he was on his last legs. Then next play he'd rip off an explosive run.

About 20 years ago, ESPN did it's top 100 athletes of the 20th century. I think Michael Jordan was #1. Brown was in the top 5.
Being a youngster and not appreciating Brown, the guy I thought got no love in ESPN's list was Bo Jackson. 30 home runs and 1000 yards rushing in one year is pretty impressive

Jordan is similar to the Chamberlain comparison. Jordan is the best at one sport, and did not succeed at his other attempt. So he may have been great in other sports, but since we will never know, he cannot be in the conversation with Brown. Bo Jackson is a valid contender, but was not the best in either sport, as Brown excelled in multiple sports.

I think Chamberlain is in some professional volleyball player Hall of Fame. Brown was the best in football at the highest level and a star on other sports in college Brown was a vastly superior professional football player than Jackson. Jackson also excelled in other sports and, unlike Brown, played another professionally at a high enough level to be named an All-Star

To many lax experts, Brown was the greatest player of all time. Maybe if there was a pro lax league, he would have played in it. After his 2 no hitters at Manhasset HS he was scouted by the yank... But he chose lax at Syracuse

I hope it's appropriate to extend this Trivia discussion of multi-sport stars by asking a new question. If you all think not, I can easily delete the post.
Let's combine MLB baseball with college basketball on this challenge. Please note that this is not the question about "name the men who played MLB and NBA (Gene Conley, Dave Debusschere, Danny Ainge, Ron Reed, et al) The subject is baseball HOFers or MVP's who were great basketball players. When I reference a college conference it is the conference in which the school is a member in 2019-20, not when the player attended.
#1-- This player led the nation in scoring and assists as a college senior (school plays basketball in ACC)-the only player to do that. He's a member of the college basketball Hall of Fame and played in the NBA. As a baseball player this infielder won the MVP Award one year
#2-- This player set his high school's career basketball scoring record and went to college (school plays basketball in ACC) on a half baseball/half basketball scholarship. He left college early for baseball's minor leagues and became a MVP winner and Hall of Famer. He was an outfielder
#3-- This player was a college point guard playing four years and leading his team (school plays basketball in Mountain West Conference) in assists. He became a baseball HOFer as an outfielder
#4-- This player was his school's star (school plays basketball in the big East) and averaged 19.9 points per game in his college career. He played professional basketball as well and later became an MVP and HOFer as a pitcher.
#5-- This player went to college on a basketball scholarship (school plays basketball in AAC) but left after starring for the freshman team. He became an MVP and HOFer as a pitcher.
#6-- This player started on his college's basketball team in a tough conference (school plays basketball in the Big 10) and then bypassed the minor leagues to go straight to MLB. He was an excellent college pitcher but an outfielder in MLB. He played for many years and made the HOF

#1 Dick Groat is correct. I think that's the best of the questions. He did play one year in the NBA. He was an excellent MLB player --MVP once and finished second another time and made the All Star team in 5 years but was short of HOF qualifications. He played basketball for Duke and led the nation in scoring
#6 Lou Boudreau is not correct, but it looks like I have a 7th question to ask as Lou was, indeed, a MLB MVP and a college basketball star at Illinois.
#3 Tony Gwynn is correct, He was a point guard at san Diego State
#4 Bob Gibson is correct. He was a big scorer and rebounder at Creighton and played for the Harlem Globetrotters
#6 Dave Winfield is correct. A local kid, he played basketball at the University of Minnesota
