I have never been the biggest fan of Kobe personally. Obviously he was a tremendous player. Extremely driven. By all accounts, an enormous work ethic. His sexual assault case continued to hang out there. "Yeah, he's a great player, but..."
I'm in no way attempting to mitigate what he was accused of, but as I think back on this I think it's important to remember that he was 24 or 25 when that took place. I'm 40 now, and looking back I cringe at some of the decisions I made at that age. Time and circumstances can change people, or at least it changes what's important to them. Based on everything we've seen, read and heard since Sunday, he made changes in his life for the better. He grew up. He matured. At the time that his assault case, I'm sure more than one person said something to the effect of, "Well, you can only hope he learns something from this and gets his act together."
It would appear he did.

Some guy named Dismas said it actually works. ---------------------------------------- If God, who happens to be more merciful than I am, chooses to forgive Bryant for his alleged assault, etc, I guess I can go along with it. I will not forgive Bryant for being a Laker I will not forgive Bryant for being a Laker
get over it. 9 people died. what's wrong with you??? Even in the darkest of times, it is important to maintain a sense of humor

Not that he needs it but I will defend Tom here knowing that he was joking, not about Kobe's death or that of the others in this tragic accident, but about "hating" another NBA franchise.
As for me, I don't care for any NBA teams, not even the Knicks, with the exception of any team that has Malcolm Miller on it, which happens to be the Raptors now. If he gets traded to the Knicks, Lakers, even the (gasp!) Celtics, I will root for that team.

Guys, try to keep things in perspective:
1. Yes, Kobe was "accused" of assault. No mitigation is needed since he was not convicted of anything. She brought a civil suit against him that was settled. He offered the young woman an apology. He was never convicted of any criminal act related to this, but folks are acting as if he was. An accusation does not mean guilt. Please stop acting as if it does. Everyone has good and bad in their backgrounds. In Kobe's case, the many good things he went on to do certainly need to be counted when looking at the man.
2. One poster's comment about the Lakers was clearly intended to be a joke...and yes, it was perhaps too early after Kobe's death for such an attempt at humor. But that is what it was. Yes, 9 people died tragically, but IMHO this poor judgement in a post does not deserve the type of dressing down it got.
3. Like sader1970, I generally do not care for the NBA or the general behavior and attitude shown by so many of its athletes. I will root for Malcolm. However, if the NBA disappeared tomorrow I would not shed one tear. My years as a Knick fan are now decades in the past.
I offer prayers for all who died in that tragic crash, including Kobe and his daughter and frothier loved ones. I ask folks to please hold off on the back and forth attacks and to move on. Thank you.

I saw an item on line/-a fan ran into Shaq in a Best Buy and offered condolences on the loss of his old teammate and of Shaq’s sister. Shaq bought the guy a laptop. That’s almost standard for him. He is donating $$$ from his Super Bowl event to Kobe’s charity. Finally great to hear that Kobe’s charity states it will help families of the other 7 people who died in the crash.
