Dear Supporter,
Happy New Year! I hope that you were able to spend quality time with friends and family over the holidays.
I write during a somber time at the College. Given that most rowing activities take place off campus, I am not overly familiar with most of the team but I, as did MANY on campus, knew Grace Rett. When I think about all the people Grace touched here at Holy Cross, I think back to my time in college and wish I had been involved in more when I “just didn't have the time.” That statement sounds so short-sighted as I learn just how much Grace was involved in here at Holy Cross. Her level of commitment takes a strong spirit, and her spirit will live on with all of us FOREVER!! Hug your family and friends, because the ride is short but the impact we have on one another lives on, like Grace's will with all of us.
The last time I wrote was mid-November. Congrats to each of you on winning your SEVENTH Patriot League title!!!
We are all very proud of this accomplishment but in NO WAY feel content. There is a saying about "waking up on third base" which references the younger members of any team who win early in their careers. This saying basically implies that those young men will feel entitled, and as they stand on third base, seeing home plate VERY clearly, they do not fully understand the struggle that it took to get to that point. Although I do not fully agree with this sentiment regarding our current team, this concept is certainly one that we will address and prevent from becoming a reality throughout the winter, spring and summer. We ALL must get back to work and "re-earn" our stripes. We are not the same team that we were a year ago, so it is back to the drawing board and each position is once again open. The mission has changed and we gratefully accept that challenge.
The initial National Signing Day went very well. We added depth in key positions and the talent that will be joining us this summer is special. YOU all are a big reason why many elect to join our program, and for that we say THANK YOU. Please keep it up. Our main focuses for the second Signing Day will be DL, TE, and possibly a QB and K. We like how this class is shaping up and 80% of this class HAS been set since the summer. We are recruiting at a higher level than we initially anticipated and although that is nice… development and retention are paramount. That is where I feel we can take our program to another level. Developing on-field skills, as well as continuing to develop them for life after football, is what we are here to do. Once again, YOU have a lot to do with that.
You will be hearing from Larry and Spenser shortly about how you can support the program this spring. Their impact on our team has been significant. MANY of you are doing all that you can, and I hope that those of you who are thinking about financially supporting the program will put those thoughts into action. Last year, we raised $290,125 from 643 donors, and 37% of our former football student-athletes made a gift. This year, we need to raise $300,000 for our program. We have currently raised $62,000 toward this important goal. If you are a proud alum, parent or friend of Holy Cross football, want to support our impressive student-athletes, and like the direction we are moving, NOW is the time to get involved. Don’t allow us to fall back in ANY way. We have so many things that we would like to improve for the team -- from off-season nutrition to team-building exercises to leadership training to office and locker room graphics, and most importantly a NEW trophy case that we intend to continue to fill each year.
It takes a FULL year to put a trophy in a trophy case, and that year has already begun for us. We will not waiver on the ideals of TEAM and hard work and our core values of: Attention to Detail, Positive Attitude and Urgency will continue to be the guiding forces in our team’s continued success. We will live each day to its fullest, and I trust that you all will do the same.
Continue to believe in YOUR team. Attend a practice this spring if you can. Critique if you must. But NEVER stop believing.
