Well, in an uninspiring start to the season, Massey seems to have not noticed our game (HC and Morgan State are still listed as 0-0) or most of the PL. Here is what they currently have as ranking: 007 Dartmouth (0-0) 008 Harvard (0-0) 029 Fordham (0-1) 040 New Hampshire (0-1) 042 HOLY CROSS (1-0)* 043 Colgate (0-1) 046 Albany NY (1-0) 052 Lehigh (0-1)* 066 Georgetown (1-0)* 072 Bucknell (1-0)* 102 Lafayette (1-0)* 108 Morgan St (0-1)*
* yesterday's results not yet posted.

I think we have seen posts in the past that Massey rankings aren't very accurate this early in the season. But having us just 2 notches below UNH despite a big win for HC and a big loss to UNH, I think demonstrates that not much stock should be put on this.
We will certainly be heavy underdogs this coming Saturday at Wildcat Stadium.

We will certainly be heavy underdogs this coming Saturday at Wildcat Stadium. Well, for some reason most of the PL games had not yet been included in this poll (as I noted above). I e-mailed Massey to point out the omission and you can see the updated ranking list here: 07 Harvard (0-0) 08 Dartmouth (0-0) 27 Fordham (0-1) 37 HOLY CROSS (1-0)38 New Hampshire (0-1) 40 Colgate (0-1) 43 Albany NY (1-0) 54 Bucknell (1-0) 57 Lehigh (0-1) 62 Georgetown (1-0) 79 Lafayette (1-0) 108 Morgan St (0-1) Massey makes HC as a 3 point underdog at UNH (24-27). HC is not a heavy underdog, since he gives HC a 45% chance of a win.

No reason we cannot be a top 10 team within a few short weeks with winds over UNH, Harvard, and Dartmouth. Our competitive OOC schedule affords this opportunity.

The phrase "irrational exuberance" comes to mind. But love the optimism.

The phrase "irrational exuberance" comes to mind. But love the optimism. This week is not a "must" game (as I said in an earlier post), but Morgan State was a "must win." This week, at UNH, we learn about possible future national rank (as well as our chances against Harvard and Yale). HC does need to be more consistent than we saw last week, and a slow start could be very hard to overcome. They will be fired up in their new stadium and looking to to score early (ad often) to bounce back from last week's shutout on the "left coast."

I like that we faced a bit of adversity early on yesterday, rebounded, and got the offensive machine in gear. I like even more that UNH was blanked with little offensive or defensive rhythm. It's all about who has early momentum at this stage of the season and this is heavily in favor of HC right now. Consequently I would not be surprised if UNH has some opening night jitters in their new joint. This could be a defining win for Coach Gilmore in the new era of HC football and hopefully the start of a great and more competitive New England rivalry against another fine program.

Teams are usually hopping mad following an embarrassing loss. Look out.

Now joe you need to relax. Week one went the way everyone knew it would. Holy Cross blew out a very bad MEAC team and UNH got beat by a top 30 FBS team. This week it's in Wildcat Stadium against a defense that gave SDSU's offense fits as stated by their OC. Coach Mac has the longest playoff streak in the nation he will have UNH ready. Please don't overlook the Wildcats.

That will not happen...count on it. PS: San Diego State was/is ranked #50 in at least one poll of FBS teams. That is certainly good, but not near #30. Who ranked them at #30?

SDS was 31 in last week's AP and 37 in the coaches' poll, the two most respected polls

Two years go, HC beat Morgan State 29-26 in the final seconds.
Several intangibles: 1.) Teams have weeks that they can devote to preparing for their opening opponent. 2.) Any effect on UNH from a long road trip. (UNH did fly charter.)

I have always believed the collegiate fball is one of the team sports where emotions most effect the outcome. UNH will have the edge in Emotion.
