Father Coyne, an astrophysicist, had been the Director of the Vatican Observatory. He retired to teach at Lemoyne College. A graduate of Fordham, Fr. Coyne was a leading proponent of the coexistence of science and religion. He rejected Creationism and Intelligent Design on scientific grounds and vigorously supported the scientific Theory of Evolution as part of his religious belief in the continuing presence of God in our lives.
