CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – American senior guard Sa’eed Nelson became the first men’s basketball student-athlete in League history to total 2,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists and was named the 2019-20 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Year when the League office announced honors on Monday.
Regular-season champion Colgate claimed two of the four major awards as senior forward Will Rayman received the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year after leading the League in rebounding (8.9 rpg). Matt Langel became the first League men’s basketball head coach to earn coach of the year in three straight seasons.
Holy Cross freshman forward Joe Pridgen collected Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors after earning League rookie of the week eight times during the regular season. Pridgen averaged 17.2 points per game, good for fourth in the League. He is third among Patriot League history in points by a freshman (499).
2019-20 Patriot League Men’s Basketball Player of the Year

*The New York City native is the third men’s basketball student-athlete in Patriot League history to reach 1,800 career points and 800 rebounds, joining Bucknell’s Mike Muscala and Lehigh’s Tim Kempton.

*Pridgen currently ranks third all-time in total points by a Patriot League rookie with 499, behind only McCollum (631) and Colgate’s Adonal Foyle (509).

*Langel is the first coach in Patriot League men’s basketball history to earn coach of the year honors in three-straight seasons. Bucknell’s Nathan Davis and Dave Paulsen, Lafayette’s Fran O’Hanlon and Lehigh’s Billy Taylor each received the honor twice-in-a-row.
2019-20 All-Patriot League Teams
Boston University and Colgate each placed a trio of student-athletes on the three All-Patriot League squads. American and Army West Point had two apiece while Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola Maryland and Navy had one selection apiece.
Nine student-athletes are multi-time All-Patriot League honorees, including all six members of the first team.
Nelson, Rayman and Boston University senior forward Max Mahoney (15.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg, .590 FG pct.) each collected their third All-League honor by making the first team. Nelson picked up first-team honors for the second time, Rayman had been a second-team pick in the previous two seasons while Mahoney was named to the second team in 2019 and third team in 2018.
Army West Point senior guard Tommy Funk (17.4 ppg) became the League’s career assists leader and finished eighth in NCAA DI with 6.9 assists per game to earn first-team honors; he was a third-team selection in 2019. Colgate junior guard Jordan Burns (15.6 ppg, 4.5 apg) made the first team this season after receiving second-team honors and winning Patriot League Tournament MVP in 2019. Loyola Maryland senior guard Andrew Kostecka (19.9 ppg, 1.9 spg), the League’s leading scorer, was named to the first-team for the second-straight season.
Colgate senior forward Rapolas Ivanauskas (12.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg) was selected to the second team after earning player of the year and a first-team spot last season. Lafayette junior guard Justin Jaworski (17.1 ppg, .360 3pt pct.) collected second-team honors and Lehigh senior guard Jordan Cohen was named to the third-team after both were third-team selections in 2019. Army West Point senior center Matt Wilson (16.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg, .632 FG pct.), Boston University sophomore forward Walter Whyte 12.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Navy junior Cam Davis (16.4 ppg) each received All-League honors for the first time with a spot on the second team.

Rayman highlights the All-Defensive Team, along with Kostecka, a three-time all-defensive team selection. Beckton earned defensive team accolades for the second time. Boston University’s Mahoney and sophomore guard Jonas Harper round out the five-person group.
Pridgen leads an eight-person All-Rookie Team. Boston University freshman guard Ethan Brittain-Watts, Colgate freshman forward Keegan Records, Lafayette freshman forward Leo O’Boyle, Lehigh freshman guard Reed Fenton and Loyola Maryland freshman forwards Santi Aldama and Golden Dike along with freshman guard Cam Spencer make up the rookie team.
The Patriot League major awards and all-League teams were voted on by Patriot League men’s basketball head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
