I believe in many things including redemption, humility, and a commitment to excellence. I also like winning and the impact that truly competitive programs have on a college campus. Think Iona would make this hire without already having checked with the NCAA to see if there were any impending meaningful violations? I applaud Iona President Seamus Carey for having the fortitude and vision to make this move. I would fully expect that Iona will play many high profile OOC games at MSG. Social media is exploding with 98% positive commentary on this hire. Can't buy press like that. When schools in the northeast are fighting ever harder for students and the do re mi of endowment dollars are increasingly important, opportunities to hire individuals who can have an impact such as RP are typically non-existent. Oh, what might have been. Another huge missed opportunity for the Crusaders. And if you are wondering if my comment here means what you might think it does. The answer is YES. +100000 I’m jealous of Iona’s ability to make such a powerful and “unconventional” move in the cover of darkness while the rest of the sports world was asleep. I can only dream of the days when HC leadership would have the fortitude to step up and break the status quo. = win at ALL costs

Iona AD “Rick’s values aligned with the goals and values for the college” No further comment is needed. Good lord. Got his cue from scum Ian McCaw hiring bigger scum Art Briles at "Christian values" Liberty U. I guess.

Pretty damning indictment of the people that run Iona. Zero standards and no self respect. Pitino is scum and by association so now is Iona.

Can only imagine how far into his first year it took HCBN to develop Buyer’s Remorse. Saddled with a disastrous situation and an A.D. unwilling to support him in his desire to rebuild (aka over-recruit). Poor guy. Burroughs & Blossom like wearing a concrete necktie in the deep end of the pool. Please elaborate. Who was Nelson getting in July to show up on campus in August? And for the future, he did know Holy Cross was in the Patriot League and probably wasn't leaving that league any time soon.

Imagine if you would that early into his first campaign HCBN rapidly understood the sinking ship he was asked to guide. He then informed ADMB that the most effective way to salvage the disaster he inherited (is it fair to characterize a 3-29 team a disaster?) was to over-recruit and bring in as many players as possible for the 2020-21 team. Only to be told NO. Cannot support that. Within the rules but to aggressive for a school that really does not care about excellence in athletics. Take it to the bank. 20+ L seasons preferable for our leaders on The Hill.

How many did he want to bring in? He's got 4 (or is it 5) and seems like there is still active (yes, I know, suspended) recruiting going on. Is there a cap at 5? (edit) There shouldn't be other than the 13 total. It's the coach's job to figure it out if he gives more now and has to give less later! And the kids he's recruiting can count! If they aren't comfortable with competing for playing time, they're not coming here!
Or is it more who he can recruit, which has been a bone of contention here long before Burroughs, Blossom or Nelson was around?
Another possible "bone" is Copeland, I guess. Should be gone, shouldn't he?

It’s not a “high risk, high reward” gamble. We have decades of evidence as to what kind of human being Rick Pitino is. Iona decided to hitch their wagon to this garbage person. Absolute craziness. Pitino has won. Not a huge stretch to think he will have Iona dancing soon and regularly. High Reward Historically Pitino has been a scum bag. There has never been a hint of remorse, there's a large probability he'll bring scandal to Iona. Large probability, but in all fairness, not a certainty. High risk

Sounds like he's bringing in the maximum players. Precisely what was he told no about? I don't know if Reilly had a back-up plan and applied to HC in the winter or if TPTB gave Coach Nelson some slack and let the kid turn in a late application to get admitted in August

Where's Sarasota, he used to teach there! Iona has about 3,300 undergrads and an endowment of only $160Million. I believe Pitino's hiring represents the desperation that a small, Catholic, liberal arts college can feel in today's college environment. HC's ace in the hole is its large endowment/student population ratio. It must utilize it and grow it wisely.

Out of curiosity, is Iona virulently top down? Would this decision have been run up the flag pole all the way to Roma?

Iona is just outside the New Rochelle containment zone, which is centered on a synagogue on North Ave north of the college (which is also on North Ave). www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katebubacz/inside-new-rochelle-quarantine-photos^^^Photos of 'life' inside the containment zone. The experience of having lived in/near a containment zone is not likely to induce fans of hoops to gravitate to arenas to watch Iona basketball anytime soon.

Yes, they are. As posted earlier - the Irish Christian Brothers no longer exist (and have not for years). They became "Brothers of the Christian Schools" - "Congregation of Christian Brothers" zand now - in North America - the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers. If bayou want to know the reason for all the name changes, just PM me.

I think it would be a safe assumption that the hiring of Rick Pitino was ultimately made jointly by the Iona AD and the president, Seamus Carey.
Carey took the reins at Iona less than a year ago in mid-2019 and is the second lay individual to lead the college which was founded in 1940.
Interesting background, for those who care: (https://www.iona.edu/about/news-events/news/seamus-carey-a-leading-academic-named-as-iona-coll.aspx)
5/14/2019 NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Seamus Carey, Ph.D., a national leader in higher education, who has been vocal on the relevance and importance of a liberal arts education, will become Iona College’s ninth president, beginning July 1, 2019, announced James P. Hynes, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Iona College. Carey will succeed Joseph E. Nyre, Ph.D., Iona’s first lay president, who has led the College since 2011, during a time of unprecedented growth.
Hynes said that Carey was selected from a large field of outstanding candidates on the strength of his tenure as president of Transylvania University, a highly regarded liberal arts college in Lexington, Ky., where, since 2014, he transformed the campus, successfully led the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusion efforts, and forged strong ties to the city’s civic and business communities. Carey also was an effective leader at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., where he served as dean of Arts and Sciences for four years. Prior to Sacred Heart, he was chairman of the philosophy department at Manhattan College where he taught for nine years. With each role, Carey has focused on ensuring students’ experiences incorporate studies of the liberal arts and make them career ready.
“Dr. Carey is the right person for the right time at Iona College,” Hynes said. “A highly regarded leader, philosopher, and academic, he has all the necessary skills and vision to build on Iona’s successes, and ensure its legacy among Catholic colleges.”
A Bronx native and first-generation college student, Carey earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Master of Arts from Fordham University, and a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College. He attended Harvard’s Management Development Program and the Executive Leadership Academy sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges. He published three books, which have focused on the intersection of philosophy, parenting, and family life; and is a contributor to Huffington Post.
“I am truly honored to join a community that understands the power of education and its ability to develop character, broaden horizons, and transform lives,” said Carey. “I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity and look forward to being a proud Gael.”
Thomas Moretti, Ph.D., chair of the College’s Faculty Senate, said he was tremendously impressed by Carey’s background and philosophy. "Dr. Carey deeply values the liberal arts tradition," Moretti explained, "and he knows its goal for Iona faculty and students alike: to forge ahead together on the path of goodness, success, and civic purpose. We welcome his leadership, his acumen, and his vision, and we look forward to working with him."
In recent years, Iona College has undergone a great many changes, including the launch of the Hynes Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the development of a new core curriculum, the expansion of the campus footprint, including the addition of two new residence halls, record levels of fundraising, and an investment in health sciences programs such as Occupational Therapy and Communications Science Disorders. Currently, the College has two major construction projects in progress with renovations and modernizations of the LaPenta School of Business and Spellman Hall, and, this month, Iona announced the Hynes Athletics Center will also commence a transformational renovation over the summer.
“Dr. Carey has a reputation of believing in, and engaging with, students,” said Hannah McGowan, a college senior, and president of Iona’s Student Government Association. “He recognizes their individuality, and knows first-hand that education is about providing students with the tools and values to make a difference in the world.”
A devout Catholic, Carey is married to his wife, Noreen, whom he met in high school. He attended Mt. Saint Michael and she attended St. Barnabas, Catholic high schools in the Bronx. They have three children: Caitriona, a 2018 graduate of Hobart and William Smith College; Anna, a rising senior in the Honors College at the University of Kentucky; and James, who will be attending Gettysburg College in the fall.

In a full page article in the NJ Record today, RP referred to Carey as his "long time friend." The article did mention all of RP's baggage, but was actually positive overall.

I had a few slight "dealings" with Pitino...He is one of the most intense people I have ever met....Met him when he was at BU recruiting a kid from our school, so much pressure from him in the meeting could be felt inside of me....and I was a t a clinic he did when he got the Providence job..He did an hour on individual workout moves, I was exhausted listening to, and watching him....and his assistant at PC was Gorgon Cheasa, he was from the same mold....I distinctly remember so many of the HS coaches in attendance saying they could never play for those 2....BUT I did get a a huge amount of useful info from them!

That Record article quoted him as saying this will be his last college job. He has no goals beyond this and wants to retire from Iona. I wonder how much his word is worth today? As a Bergen Catholic H.S. grad (and a "double Crusader") I hope Iona does well under Pitino and that he has truly changed. I just don't expect it.
