While the team is in Fl, not sure why we're playing perennial power Florida St (no.11 this year) tonight (maybe because our coach is an alum) but it's like our basketball team playing UConn. Game is on espn-watch - so far we're 0-5 on the season, having been outscored 28-2 in our first 4 games against mediocre competition. Our ace Nelson is pitching but this is a totally different scene than PL play.

Talk about a change in competition! Our ace Kelly Nelson gave up 10 earned runs in 4 1/3 innings against So Dakota St and we lost 10 zip - we’re playing fla gulf coast now and Barbarick did not record an out in the first inning before being lifted after 4 earned runs - college softball is all about pitching and ours is PL level and not more

Lost 1-0 to quinnipiac in 9 innings - might be a long season for the girls

Bucknell hired Sarah Caffrey as their new head coach. Five years as an assistant at Penn State, two before that at Utah and two more at Texas Tech following her pitching career at Jacksonville. Good pick-up for the Bison.

Bucknell hired Sarah Caffrey as their new head coach. Five years as an assistant at Penn State, two before that at Utah and two more at Texas Tech following her pitching career at Jacksonville. Good pick-up for the Bison. Previous head coach Joey Lye had taken a leave of absence for the 2020 season, including fall ball, to play for the Canadian National Team in the many months of training leading up to the Olympics. With the postponement of the 2020 Games, she would have had to take a second year off, and I don't think that was acceptable to the Bucknell administration - especially with the team's top assistant, who ran the team this year, having left the program in May.

I agree with Joey Lye's priorities. The chance to stand on the podium in Japan and gaze up at the Maple Leaf beats a year or two coaching in the PL. I'm sure Canadian National team members don't starve and playing in the Olympics fits nicely on the resume.

Lye, btw, has been on the Canadian National Team since 2010 - but unfortunately softball was not an Olympic sport in 2012 or 2016. So 2021 is her first and probably last shot. She does have a couple of medals from the World Championships. She won't starve but the pay is low. But no one is doing it for the money.
