He gave his life for his country in WW1 by getting gassed accidentally in a training exercise before struggling the last seven years of his life with the resultant Tuberculosis. One other thing is that Mathewson was 38 at the time. Obviously way too old to be drafted but he volunteered. Ended up in serving in France before the accident.

To win 37 games in a season without pitching on Sunday is astounding.

Did he ever pitch a doubleheader ? At least in the 50s and 60s most doubleheaders were on Sundays

But in the year where he won 37 games (1908), the Giants played 19 doubleheaders - only one on a Sunday. Mathewson had one DH where he won both games and two others where he got a save in the first game and a win in the second game. In that era, btw, the most common offday, was Sunday.

Mack committed to Oregon St (ranked 14th) yesterday as a grad transfer - impressive - just wondering if Manis has the athleticism to have such an offer if she was a grad transfer - I think 'yes' - these two had great careers

Lauren's reward for being an iron woman for the Crusaders: No eligibility left to test herself in the P-6. I like her goal on the "Owner's Box" podcast of playing in Europe and continuing to improve with the goal of ending up in the WNBA. Whether either will be able to play next year is an open question. I wonder if the NCAA would allow fifth years of eligibility to roll over if the upcoming season is cancelled?
