Maybe some colleges will start to add a non-compete clause into scholarship offers...I have no clue if it would be legal, and how it would be enforced...could players then negotiate out of the clause? All kinds of scenarios. Maybe the accepting school pays the new players former school for the room and board he had... All this, but the integrity of amateurism is solid as oak, right?

It did have integrity, but the manner in which the kids move around now and the manner in which the coaches move, while the NCAA rakes in money, have made that ship sail a while ago. It's a business. Even at the lower levels coaches are looking to boost their resumes to take better paying jobs as quickly as they can. Makes sense too.

That’s exactly what people at Lafayette, Colgate, and Buchnell say. Right. Except we are LOSING to those teams. Sarasota? You're back. Welcome aboard.

In his opening press conference at Oklahoma when asked about Loyola’s biggest fan, Porter Moser said, “Sister Jean, like everybody else, is entering the transfer portal.”

Amateurism went out the door when big TV started handing out megabucks for rights to broadcast games..The bigger programs regularly get the most money from their success, the best of the best high schoolers go to those big programs, and bring in more money....

Rick Pitino has brought in two transfer guards who were 3 and 4 star recruits coming out of high school. Only drawback is it appears each only has one year of eligibility left. Gaels have two games at MSG next season; Seton Hall and BYU. Also Yale at the Barclays Center and 3 in Orlando.

What's the morning line on each of those student athletes leaving for spring break in 2022 and never setting foot again in New Rochelle?

One "big time" player told me he left Syracuse U because La. Tech offered him a "better deal." Then he added with a smile"Ya' know what I mean"? Some of the young come from desperately poor circumstances. Any money they can bring home for their families is welcome, no matter the source. Certainly, not a crime. Tangentially,I was told (possibly in error) that before St. John's had on campus dorms they provided their athletes with the amount of money that would have normally been allowed for room & board. This money meant a lot. Evidently, it was legal. not a violent of NCAA rules. Once dorms went up, StJohn's basketball went down. As I never walked in the shoes of those students it would be farcical for me to pontificate and criticize.

mm67- re: SJU; that was the prevailing story for a good 20 years at least. Never thought to confirm whether or not it was urban legend.
Certainly if you're talking about someone like Chris Mullin, a local kid; it would work out to his advantage. Others, I'm not so sure.
I have to think that the worst thing that's happened to NYC basketball is that elite players have a much greater chance of exiting the city prior to even getting to college; prep and private schools so much more in vogue.

A few of us spoke to Chris and he said very directly that was the case. If I recall my conversation with him correctly, he was very interested in Holy Cross and playing for George, but his dad was a fireman and the extra cash would help the family so he was going to St John’s. Hoops if I am wrong about the job his dad had, please feel to correct me.

Those were tough years to be a HC fan. Of the qualified, talented kids who were interested, the lure of the Big East usually carried the day.

Being there in the early 90s was a fun time for both Mens and Women's hoops. Competitive with good schedules and the Gym was (relatively) packed. Great atmosphere. Still remember women's hosting Auburn my Freshman year and beating them.
AND both teams had good people on them. Good guys and gals.

That era and most of the Willard era is why I said most of the last forty years. As far as having good people, isn't that a given concerning HC student athletes from all eras.

I was more focused on the early 80s after Perry, Witts, etc. were gone and the people replacing them were clearly a cut below; George over time adjusted to the hand he was dealt and put a pretty good team out there by the end of the decade.
Then, of course; the Patriot League became an all sports league....

GB got sacked big time twice in just under a decade. After the second time, he must have said enough is enough although he did stay until his last class of scholarship players had graduated plus one more year.
