If he does come to HC, would he eligible right away. Yes, with two years eligibility.

If he comes, he would fill in a blank scholarship class

Assuming Townsel comes, here’s what we look like for next year. He definitely helps with class balancing. If Niego were to redshirt, we’d be in even better shape re: class balancing. At least one scholarship left assuming no one else leaves.
2024 (4 scholarship players) Humphrey Johnson Rabinovich Martindale
2023 (3) Wade Pridgen Reilly
2022 (1) Townsel Hart*
2021 (4) Butler Niego Faw Copeland
*Walk-on

If he comes, he would fill in a blank scholarship class I see he had interest from several Ivies during his jr year at Whitney Young. Chris Clemons came to HC from Whitney Young.

If Reilly isn’t on scholarship and Copeland doesn’t return, we still have a few scholarships left with in which to play.

From 2016:
Whitney Young 2017 Malcolm Townsel is a 6’3” shooting guard that flies a bit under the radar for the Dolphins. He has impressed this spring playing for SYF on the circuit. Townsel is super active on the defensive end using his length and quickness to cause turnovers. Best offensively hitting the glass for put backs and getting out in the transition game. Solid wing passer. Worth a look at D2 level and would be a high level D3/NAIA prospect.
Townsel discussed his high school season.
“I feel like I progressed throughout the year. I think I could have been more consistent, but I had a lot of progression in terms of strength and playing at a high level.”
What are the strengths of his game?
“I like to get out in transition, drive, finish above the rim. Knock down jump shots and use my length on defense.”
He says he has varying levels of interest from Cornell, Brown, Western Illinois, and Austin Peay. Cornell is the school he has talked to the most.
“Their assistant coach is in constant contact with me. He knows people in my conference and is interested in how I am playing. He is talking a lot to me.”

"A look at D2 level" is not encouraging--perhaps he proved them all wrong with strong JuCo play??

Malcolm was listed at 6-5 and 6-4 depending on the source in high school so I don't think it's a matter of a post-HS growth spurt. Note also that one site had him at Don Bosco Prep in Chicago so he may have attended 3 high schools: Whitney Young, Don Bosco, Evanston

He’s available to play next year. He’s probably 20 years old and physically ready to compete. He’s reportedly a strong defender. He gives us a body in an otherwise empty class. If he wants to be here and compete, I’ll be happy to root for him.

My guess is that this will not be confirmed to denied until the fall when the roster gets updated. I don't know a lot about the website, but disclaimer that many posters do not consider it reliable. At any rate, someone went our of their way to make an adjustment in Niego's status

Wonder if we are out on Montgomery, Rodgers and Stevens and thus moved on to Plan B with Townsel, although it appears that even if Townsell commits, Reilly is on scholarship and Copeland returns we still have one more scholarship available. If Townsell does commit hopefully it will work out but in the recent past we have had no luck with this type of recruit (late signee with virtually no other offers). We're due for a break on one of these kids and maybe Townsell will be that guy.

If he comes here, he will immediately become on of the elders on the roster.

I am not sure that Grandison bailing out on the team was exactly luck...at least not "good" luck.

RGS think Hoops referring to Grandison being a late signee nothing to do with his leaving the program. Hoops I hope you're right and Townsell is a productive player as we are going to need bodies to even run competitive practices next year. Who was the last Juco we had scholarship? I think Jon Gibbons was a Juco but don't think he ever got a scholarship and ended up leaving.

I do not know if he will be productive or not, only hope as you do Believe you are correct about Gibbons

If he can contribute even as a solid role player, getting a guy who can play next year and steps into an otherwise empty class is a positive development. We’ll find out soon enough if he can contribute. I suspect he can.
