Football Looks to Take Care of Business, And Celebrate
Sean McDonnell is thrilled that his mentor, legendary Wildcat coach Bill Bowes is being honored at halftime of the UNH-Holy Cross game that serves as the grand opener of Wildcat Stadium on Saturday night (7 p.m., American Sports Network/NESN). He's excited about the new stadium, too, and what it means not only for his group, but for other Wildcat athletic teams and the school overall. But McDonnell is also well aware that Saturday is a work night for his team.
The Wildcats dropped their first game of the season, 31-0 at San Diego State last week. They'll try to get back on track Saturday night against a high-powered Holy Cross team that won its opener, 51-24, last Saturday at Morgan State.
"I imagine Saturday night Wildcat Stadium is going to be a very good place to be in New Hampshire," McDonnell said. "I think it's going to be a great crowd with a lot of energy, with a lot of special people that put in a lot of special work for it. But our guys have got to play football." The Wildcats had a tough time on offense against a stingy San Diego State defense. "Top of the list for us on the offensive side of the ball is running the ball with some effectiveness, having some physicality on the offensive line and protecting the quarterback," McDonnell said. "Doing the things we need to do so we can get the ball to our players in open spaces. I think we've got some talented kids on offense that weren't able to show anything last Saturday night because of the length and the strength and the ability of San Diego State. I'm interested to see how the offense responds, to be honest with you."
UNH had 141 yards of offense against San Diego State, evenly split between rushing and passing. Starting quarterback Trevor Knight had a rough night passing. McDonnell hopes to get senior running back Dalton Crossan and other Wildcat weapons going against the Crusaders. Crossan led UNH in rushing with 11 carries for 38 yards and in receiving with a pair of catches for 37 yards.
"We're just going to have to execute better this week than last," said sophomore wide receiver Neil O'Connor. "They did some things to slow our offense down a little bit. We couldn't really get going, but I think we'll be better this week and the weeks to come." The defense must contend with a strong Holy Cross offense run by senior quarterback Peter Pujals that, in contrast to San Diego State's, thinks pass first.
"They like to spread teams out a little bit," said UNH senior defensive end Cam Shorey. "Very different than last week. They like to throw the football. I think they pass about 70 percent of the time. Not to say they can't run the football, because they can. They run everything through the quarterback and he's a good player. He's going to be a big challenge this week."
Pujals is a four-year starter. Last year, he passed for 3,189 yards and 28 touchdowns to earn first-team All Patriot League honors.
Pujals completed 22 of his 38 passes for 240 yards and three TDs against Morgan State. Diquan Walker carried eight times for 92 yards and a pair of scores and Gabe Guild 17 times for 85 yards and two scores last week.

Bowes is being honored as part of his being elected to the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame. He is being inducted into the prestigious group in December. . . . McDonnell expects to have sophomore wide receiver Rory Donovan and redshirt freshman Malik Love, both of whom were out last week, back against Holy Cross. Sophomore tight end Nick Derocher is also expected back. Sophomore wide receiver Kieran Presley is not expected to return. . . . UNH has won its last three games against Holy Cross and leads the overall series 7-6. This game marks the start of a four-year series between the teams.
