Not that common a nick name for him I had the benefit of watching many of his games in person, inc The Greatest Game Ever Played Late 50s, 60s

If you did you should have known he was the "Golden Boy from Southern Cal".

Gifford was a great football player, I remember the tremendous one-handed catch he made in one of the championship games and that was in the days before players wore vacuum gloves. I also remember that he lost a season after I think it was Chuck Bednarik hammered him on a tackle, turning Frank from a halfback into a flanker when he returned. I recall (maybe I was 7 or 8) being adamant that Bednarik should have been required to pay for the hospital bills--nonsensical now but top of mind for me then. In pre-AFL days, and for a while thereafter, all of New England was NY Football Giants territory. Frank did the Westinghouse ads ("you can be sher if it's Westinghouse") on TV for years and my mother thought he was the handsomest man on earth.

Tittle to Del Shofner!" as we heaved the pigskin and then after a while it changed to "Long bomb, Babe Parilli to Gino Cappelletti!" Del passed on March 11th at 85, Y.A. and Babe are gone but Gino is still with us and why he isn't in Canton is a mystery. He was the all time leading scorer in the AFL, and he could also qualify as one half of Gil and Gino in the broadcaster's wing if the pro football hall has one.

Geno came from that era when position players (Groza, Michaels, Hornung, et al) also kicked field goals and extra points. I believe he had a bar in Boston and I recall Eddie Andelman of the Sports Huddle always called it "The Missed Extra Point"-- I think the "missed" was Eddie's addition to the real name.
He didn't make it to AFL until he was 26--spent some time in CFL and US Army then a year out of football--had to look that up

The bar was called "The Point After." I worked as a bartender at Ken's Steak House in Framingham in 1973-74, a few years after Gino retired. He would come in with his wife and eat in the "Cafe Five" room where Ken sat any celebrities such as Curt Gowdy or singers like Tom Jones who were playing at the Chateau DeVille across the street. If you weren't a celebrity you had to squeeze a tip into the hand of the hostess or there wouldn't be any tables available and then order off a more expensive menu than the main dining room. If you were a celebrity your meal would be comped. There was a narrow entrance way into the room and one time I had to squeeze by Gino to get through. It was like bumping into a cement wall. He was that solid even after retiring.

Interesting you said "bumping into a cement wall." In an intramural bball game I was run into a pick set by Jon Morris, future Patriots all Pro center. It was like running into a cement wall. Painful. Never forgot it.

Good call . Yaz is Number 7 From someone who considers himself a Boston sports guy, I can't believe I'm 0 for 2 picking the Herald's last 8

Finally got one right with Havlicek.
Looks like I missed with Ortiz and Marciano. There is zero chance the top five won't be Russell, Brady, Orr, Williams, and Bird. Maybe one flip -flop but basically in that order

I think that Brady will be first due to recency bias and Patriot football over hoops in Boston

Maybe one flip -flop but basically in that order The first four can all be argued as the GOAT at their particular position in their particular sport. I think Larry could be open to a challenge by Big Papi for the number five spot. Ortiz could be argued as the GOAT DH, but that's a less significant position than the "point forward" Larry played with the offense running through him. I'll go with Bird but Papi is right behind him with a bat in his hand.

One man's opinion-- Bird is an all-time great NBA player. Papi is not of the same status in baseball

Could Papi's use of PEDs play a role in determining his place on this list?

Could Papi's use of PEDs play a role in determining his place on this list? I thought he would be in instead of Yaz becauae of the whole recent thing. Allegations of PED probably played no role. That isn't even talked about around here

The Splendid Splinter was #4 today, assuring top 3 will be Russell, Brady & Orr in some order.

Ortiz made 10 All-Star teams as a Red Sox player. Yastrzemski made 18.

Ortiz made 10 All-Star teams as a Red Sox player. Yastrzemski made 18. Yaz had the advantage of playing two full seasons 1961-62 during the two all star game era of 1959-1962. That added some interest for baseball fans - debating who would make each team. However, Yaz didn't make his first all star team until 1963. Carry on.😊
