This means native born and raised. NYC if just birth, I could have added Michael Jordan, born in Brooklyn, but he was raised in NC. if I went a few miles east of Queens to Manhasset, Jim Brown would be on the list, at the top. A few more miles to Hempstead would find Dr.J But I will stick to the 5 boroughs
1- Alcindor/Abdul Jabbar 2-Sandy Koufax 3- The Cooz 4- Lou Gehrig 5- John McEnroe 6- Althea Gibson 7- Sugar Ray Robinson 8- Hank Greenberg 9- Connie Hawkins 10-Gene Tunney
So, Ky, whom did I omit ?

There's so many to consider--some really terrific but not top 10: Rocky Colavito, Tommie Davis, Joe Torre, Chris Mullin, Tiny Archibald, Billy Cunningham, et al.
You may want to consider Alex Rodriguez if you overlook the PEDs, Frankie Frisch, Jim Palmer, Whitey Ford, Dolph Schayes, Willie Keeler, Carmelo Anthony.

Melo grew up in Baltimore, Alex in Miami. Manny Ramirez was raised in Washington Heights and attended George Washington HS. He definitely belongs on the list. Others -- Jamal Mashburn, John Candelaria, Craig Biggio (Smithtown, LI), Stephon Marbury, Kenny Anderson, Ron Artest, Kemba Walker, Joakim Noah, Danny Green (St. Mary's-Manhassat), Tobias Harris (Half Hollow Hills in LI).

Tough to do a list like this. Most people know where athletes made their name. Even big sports fans might not know where guys grew up

I have not thought about Rocky Colavito in 20 years. I immediately had a visual of his signature stretching with the bat over his head and behind his back before an at bat, when I read his name. Jim Palmer and Whitey Ford should be on the bubble for top ten if "You can't be serious!" John McEnroe is in there.

I guess it's a matter of how you rank or value the sports. McEnroe is, arguably, one of the top 20 tennis players in history while Palmer and Ford are not Top 20 baseball players of all time.

Althea Gibson? Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner from Tarrytown? Hard to ignore someone who held the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" That being said, as I mentioned on the other thread, the nature of these lists don't give a lot of love to olympians. Too short a window in the limelight

And the guideline was to be born and raised in one of the 5 boroughs. Tarrytown is in Westchester.

I've got Jenner in my top ten transgender athletes worldwide. It's filling out the rest of the list that has me stumped. Renee Richards is an obvious one. Now 85, Richards qualified for the U. S. Open five times as a man, was invited to try out for the New York Yankees as a baseball player and was married to a model before having surgery and reaching number 20 in the women's tennis rankings in her forties. Fallon Fox, an MMA fighter is another transgender athlete. I need seven more.
