Do we have many examples of other sports writers, columnists, commentators promoting or talking about their colleges a lot? I'm not aware of where many of them went to college, other than knowing that Syracuse is over-represented. Northwestern is another big one. Mike Greenberg talks alot about them. Skip Bayless talks about Oklahoma which he is a fan of and Vanderbilt where he went sometimes. For the most part they don't really talk about college athletics besides March Madness and the College Football Playoff.

The thing is...we could have such a loud "megaphone" in the media....but it's mostly muted

Bob Ryan of the Globe, BC '68, actually has been about the biggest megaphone for HC's basketball glory years. He got into trouble once when he wrote that Holy Cross was still the only New England school to have won an NCAA championship in MBB when UCONN had won one by then. He also wrote while Ronnie Perry, jr. was in high school at CM (but still on the short list for the AD opening that went to his Dad🙂) that young Ron was more fundamentally sound than some NBA guards.

No, I hear ya....just seems like he could be a biggah "megaphone" such as it is for HC sports...seemed to really drop off for him after the Willard years. Hopefully he jumps on the Chesney/football train moving forward. And potentially turn off viewers / listeners? "Why does this guy always bring up some small religious college who once put a scare into Kansas two decades ago?" A quip here and there about HC football / basketball is one thing, but anything more would be foolish for the content he churns out.

The ball is in HC's court. You can't manufacture interest for low major college teams in the Boston media. Like Howie Carr at the Herald, the Globe depends on Dan to bring in readers. He can't bore them away.

The thing is...we could have such a loud "megaphone" in the media....but it's mostly muted When it comes to Holy Cross, Bill Simmons is basically the "indianhoop of the sports media". He graduated in 1991 IIRC, tail end of the Duffner era and right when the college was moving all sports into the Patriot League. Safe to say he's in the "acceptance stage" when it comes to Crusader athletics. Put it this way, if he went to Providence, he'd be much more of a megaphone for their sports than he currently is for us. He's admitted to general disinterest in Holy Cross sports. We might get a shout-out from him when the Men's Basketball team makes the NCAA tournament, that's about it.
