Congratulations to Coach Napoli! Nice recognition by his peers. Dare I suggest that, perhaps, golf is "turning around."

What possibly makes you think that a club that generates ~ 2.5 mil a year in membership dues alone has any interest whatsoever in selling?

They might...for the right price. That is the way of American business.

Outside the box: For a number of years I have thought that HC should purchase Pleasant Valley and operate it. Students could choose to purchase a discounted membership as part of an optional student fee. It would broaden the students' collegiate experience. Great for dates. It would be open to the public as a private club with public access solely to the course with higher greens fees. Alums? The clubhouse would be reserved for members only. I believe Yale, ND and West Point operate golf courses. All with greater financial resources. I'm sure there must be other schools. There could be an endowed Paul Harney Chair for the golf coach. The school could offer golf lessons for newcomers or for those who want to improve their game. Golf is a gateway for building social/business relationships. It should be encouraged, especially for students who have not had the opportunity to play. Also. playing a round of golf is a great way to deal with the stresses of life. I believe applications would spike. Golf is life.  "The Pleasant Valley Club of Holy Cross." They could have combined that with the retreat center and saved money.🙂 My. Holyoke College has a golf course as does Nichols College. Yale also has the Yale Forest that's all around me. You never see anyone walking in there but I saw about thirty people last weekend escaping claustrophobia from more crowded locales during the shut down I presumed. Harvard has the Harvard forest in Petersham, MA. There was an old former Catholic girls boarding school in Petersham, MA. that was for sale for years across the street from an entrance to the Harvard Forest that I thought would be a good retreat center and perhaps partner with Harvard for our science students to study in the Forest. However HC found a family to donate towards building and naming a brand new beautiful retreat center closer to campus. My sense is a new building is easier to find a naming donor for. Holy Cross wisely doesn't primarily use it's own money to invest in buildings, but if an individual or group wanted to donate enough to make a purchase of Pleasant Valley feasible, it could fit as an athletic facility.

What possibly makes you think that a club that generates ~ 2.5 mil a year in membership dues alone has any interest whatsoever in selling? The Mingolla family lost it in a foreclosure auction in 2010 and it was sold for $5 million. It was listed for sale in 2019 for $4 million after nine years of a good economy, so golf courses aren't guaranteed winners. If HC bought it with donated money and had no debt service it could be viable. I think the four mil would be better served shoring up the core mission of HC, but if an individual or group of donors wanted to specifically earmark donations to buy it, it would be a plus for HC, I believe.

Feel free to scratch the check because I guarantee you HC won't.

Feel free to scratch the check because I guarantee you HC won't. If I win a nine figure Powerball jackpot I would like to donate for HC to partner with St. Vincent Hospital and establish a Medical School. Especially now that we have the perfect name for it, The Dr. Anthony Fauci School of Medicine.

This discussion is absurd. HC is never buying a golf course unless a donor buys a club and hands HC the keys.

Of course I realize I'm not winning nine figures, but I think of that when jackpots get big.

A number of years ago I mentioned the need for a Performing Arts Center. Friends thought that it was not  agood idea, an unnecessary extravagance which would never be built. Well... Money is tight, prospects are not encouraging at HC and in general. Possibly the club could be purchased at a fire sale price with most money coming from the alums. The near future might be a good time to strike while the iron is hot. Of course, I would expect that there are real estate heavyweights among the alums who would know the art of this type of deal. HA!!! I hope they know the art of the deal better than the two year Fordham attendee.🙂

I believe Yale, ND and West Point operate golf courses. All with greater financial resources. I'm sure there must be other schools. There are over 100 colleges with golf courses - mostly large schools. However some smaller schools have courses, e.g. Dartmouth, Bucknell, Colgate, and Williams.

Nichols sold their course in the early 2000’s and recently bought it back. It is still called Dudley Hill. The Yale course is fantastic if you get a chance to play it. They have a NCAA golf regional in 2021 or 2022 I believe. Holy Cross could host at PV? Doubt they bidded on it though

If you've never played at West Point, I recommend it. Particularly spectacular when the leaves are changing.

One of our top players, rising soph Christian Emmerich finished 4th (in 144 player field) at the New England Amateur last week, shooting one over par 211 over 54 holes. His summer play looks to be all that he will have during this calendar year (although I don't understand why golf cannot be played with all necessary precautions)

You still have to travel to play golf like you travel to play football. The championship golf season in college is the spring so thankfully that's still on the table for now.

I didn't realize Emmerich grew up as a member at Kernwood another great Ross course, whose Head Pro is a Crusader Frank Dully
