Drop soccer instead
Furman produced 13 professional players in the last decade

Unlike HC, it seems that Furman was handing out significant athletic scholarships in these programs and therefore had an overhead they could not sustain - I don’t believe HC would be so exposed -

Bowling Green cut baseball last week also...Chicago State Baseball is on a lifeline while East Carolina is due to announce sports being cut this week.

Definitely pretty startling that they dropped baseball. South Carolina is in the sweet spot when it comes to college baseball. The times we find ourselves in...the other shoe is really starting to drop now.

Furman has about the same endowment $ per student as HC. They have benefited greatly over the years from the Duke Endowment (as has a certain school in Durham).
It appears that Furman is caught in a Title IX vise, enrollment is 1579 women, 1069 men. Number of unduplicated athletes 290 men, 148 women. What I suspect is that they planned on ramping up support for the women's sports to achieve a better balance, but the coronavirus dampened that plan. As a consequence, two men's sports were axed.
Furman's scollie $ were 64:36 M/F
M's lacrosse had 64 on the roster last year.

I still don't get how some schools with very limited financial resources decided that moving up to FCS scholarship football makes sense.

TPTB at HC knows that Minor Sports participation makes HC HC. Imagine if the student body tilted more to larger sit-ins on Mahogany Row. I imagine student athletes have less time and focus for that.

Foolish things I remember for no reason: Furman has been FCS/I-AA at least long enough to be in a battle with HC and Southern Illinois for the #1 national ranking the year Coach Carter led HC to the play-offs

In our only meeting on the gridiron, Holy Cross lost to Furman 14-21 on October 18, 1975. I was hoping for a rematch in 1976, as I had a colleague who was a Furman grad. Unfortunately it never happened. Furman ‘s football program is older than HC, dating back to 1889, playing the powers in the Old Southern Conference, playing teams that now make up the ACC and SEC, NC State, South Carolina, Duke, Ole Miss, Clemson, etc.
Of note, both teams wear purple and the mascots were similar, with the Paladin representing a roving knight in Armour.
Anyone remember the TV show “ Have Gun, Will Travel, Wire Paladin”, with Richard Boone ?

"Wire Paladin, San Francisco"
BTW Have gun will travel reads the card of a man. A knight without armor in a savage land. His fast gun for hire heeds the calling wind. A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin.
Paladin, Paladin where do you roam? Paladin, Paladin , far, far from home.
______ What was the name of his Asian valet?

They were supposed to be here for the semi finals my junior year had it not been for f$#&ing Western Carolina - and yes I am capable of holding a sports grudge I kept a half an eye on the Furman basketball team when the younger brother of a Crusader played there a few years ago

Hint : It is not the San Francisco Paladins

A son of one of our neighbors played for them 2-3 years ago (holder some games).
Watched them play Michigan State. Didn't win, but they were in the ballgame. Socon (a good league) champs in 2013 and 2018.
