Who are we playing here? Is that a Valpo Crusader?

Maybe it's practice. #21 looks more like Heinsohn than #24. If we could add 100 pounds to each player pictured I could definitely pick out the real Tommy Gun.

hc87 I had the same question but it’s not Valpo. HC did not play the other Crusaders in Heinsohn’s 3 yrs. on the team.

St. Michael's was the unlucky recipient of the 70-71 team getting a couple days off from what they perceived as Jack D.'s over coaching.
His father passed away and Frank McArdle stepped in for that game. Final: HC 138, St. Mike's 68. Yes, the Knights were out of their league, but HC played well enough to beat anyone on their schedule that night.

Assumption however, sometimes bit back.

Anyone here have any info, or dare I ask remembrance, on how/why we lost 2 straight tough opening losses in the NIT in Tommy Gun's Jr and Sr years?
We were ranked as high as #5 in Tom's Jr year but we were unranked when we lost to St Francis(PA) 68-64...was Stokes on that team?
Ranked #12 when the Temple Owls knocked us off 74-72 his Sr year.

Maurice Stokes played for St Francis in 53-54 and 54-55 averaging 25 points and 26 rebounds (not a typo) per game. Those were Tom Heinsohn's soph and junior years.

The season that St. M's game happened, AC blew us out at their gym*; one of 4 AC wins in the series. *Imagine Holy Cross AND Providence both played games at Laska Gym until the mid-70s? Providence was lucky their last trip there to escape w/a win and that was one of their Barnes/DiGregorio teams.

I sat next to Hal Lear in 1965 at a Sixers/Cincinnati Royals game in Philadelphia. It was part of an NBA double header with the Knicks playing the St. Louis Hawks in the first game at Convention Hall.
44 Years later, at a HC reception after the Fordham football game on October 31, 2009 at Rose Hill, I was in a conversation with a fellow HC Alum and we got into a discussion about basketball from the 1950’s and 1960’s. When the conversation turned to the legends of basketball in NYC and Philly, I mentioned Hal Lear. He looked surprised when I mentioned Mr. Lear. He then mentioned that he was related to Hal Lear, as Mr. Lear was his step father. To my surprised, he grabbed his cell phone and called him as we were standing at the reception. I mentioned my meeting him 44 years in the past at the Sixers game. Of course he did not remember meeting me at the Sixers game, but he was very gracious, and we had a nice conversation regarding other Philly legends who were sitting in the same section with us that evening.
Sadly Mr. Lear passed a couple of years ago. But what an incredible occurrence on chance conversation at a HC reception.

Those Assumption teams in the early/mid 70s were legit....regularly beating or playing good D1 teams very tough. Came close to winning the national D2 title a couple times. Remember following them nearly as close as HC back then due to the Greyhounds being on Channel 27 and a couple New Bedford guys (Ed Rodrigues and Jeff Miller) playing for them then...another guy, Billy Wurm, from those teams has lived in the NB area for years...great guy.

The Nichols coach from last year is now there, 14-12 in his first season. Hopefully good things to come for them. They have a New Zealander, an Australian and a Serb.
Lots of memorable names from that era: Jake Jones (played 1 year in the NBA), the Boylan brothers (one ended up at Marquette and was the point guard on the 1977 NCAA champs), John Grochawalski, Gary Sergo.
And they always seemed to run up against programs in the D2 tournament that were D1 the next season (before they changed the rules so you couldn't do that). Went up against Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron, Marvin Webster and the Ice Man, George Gervin.

You must have had a good antenna on the roof. Mr. B. and Mr. E. did those games as I recall. Combined they gave the viewers the best basketball knowledge in the country, and when Mr. E. took a bathroom break the viewers still got the best basketball knowledge in the country. Those were the days you could also get PC basketball on Ch. 12 in Providence with Chris Clark "Voice of the Friars."

I was a regular viewer of "Salty Brine's Shack" on Ch. 12 or 10. He always ended with "Brush your teeth and say your prayers." Good morning radio show, too on WPRO.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think Evansville was one of those schools (now in the MVC).

A quirk with him (if I remember correctly) was that he often gave the distance of the shot being taken: "Fran Costello pulls up for a 17 footer". Always wondered how he could be so precise.

Same with Johnny Most. When somebody "stopped and popped" it was like Johnny was there with a tape measure.

Didn't Togo do that with even greater precision on HC broadcasts--getting to 1/2 feet increments? I seem to remember hearing about that from my brother, HC74, before I got to HC.

They hosted the tournament for many years (probably until they moved up). Jerry Sloan, RIP, was one of their stars when they were in D2. Don't remember if AC (now AU) played them; 100% sure they played the Ragin Cajuns, Morgan State and Eastern Michigan.
