Received this email with some news:
I hope this email finds you safe and healthy during this complicated time. I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the Holy Cross family and am excited to tell you how my first month as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach has been going! Thank you so much for making me and my daughters feel so welcome. We are anxious to get to campus and meet everyone in person soon!
I am thrilled to let you know that Coach Clare Fitzpatrick is staying on staff as the Recruiting Coordinator and has been instrumental in making my transition so seamless. Her energy and enthusiasm for this program and College is felt every day, and I feel so lucky to have her on staff. Another big announcement is Coach John McCray joined the staff this week. He comes from the University of Florida where he was an assistant coach for the past three seasons. John brings amazing experience on many levels, and his recruiting ties and passion for skill development will be vital to our success. Please join me in welcoming John into our Holy Cross family!
Now for some news on the people in our life who we are most excited about, our student-athletes! The team is staying focused during this challenging time and working hard with Jeff Oliver our strength coach while at home. They have embraced me as their new coach, and I have really enjoyed building relationships with them in a short amount of time. We have weekly Zoom meetings to get to know each other and have also started to focus in on leadership topics. They amaze me with how well they have adapted to this “new normal." They are hungry, eager and looking forward to doing whatever it takes to come back to campus ready to go!
As we begin this new era, I want to thank you on behalf of the program and our student-athletes for your support and encouragement. It is your support that provides our student-athletes with the opportunity to achieve their dreams. We look forward to a fun and successful year, and we are EXCITED to have YOU be a part of our journey. I’m truly looking forward to meeting you soon!
GO CROSS GO!
Maureen Magarity
Head Coach

Looks to be a very good addition but there's got to be a story here - maybe he was encouraged to find another job (in so many words) although from his profile he was doing a good job. As two assistants are gone, it looks like McCray will be the no.1 asst. Can our salary be more than what Fl was paying him ?

After 3 seasons, the current UF head Coach is 34-57. That kind of record probably ain’t going to fly in Gainesville and he may have been told to make some changes before it’s too late.

I'm not sure he is the #1 as his resume isn't all that different than Fitzpatrick. I assume they have at least one more Ass't slot to fill as well as a DBO as there was no mention of Kirpas in the release above.

From the Gators site, there is a story from Apr 27th announcing a new asst coach and it says 'he replaces John McCray who is no longer with the program' - so seems he was let go and ends up in Worcester which is still a curious move - was HC his best offer ? Regardless of the reasons, I like the hire and hope he can recruit as we need to step up that part of our program.

Whatever the reason, he is now part of HC. IIRC, much the same thing could have been said after Ra;ph Willard came to HC from Pitt...and we were most pleased with his performance. Let's see what happens with recruits - and HC guard play (if I read his experience at FU correctly).

I am a broken record but I hope HC will exercise restraint and not fill all five coach equivalent positions for the first season of the Covid-19 recession. In good times I thought five full timers for 13 students was featherbedding, but now there is a good chance there will be no gate receipts for the games that are played. Perhaps I am amazed at the number of staffers because when I came to HC there was Jack Donahue and Frank McArdle to coach both varsity and Freshman teams, they walked uphill both ways to the Fieldhouse and they Liked it! The team won 19 games last year with only four active (one head coach, two assistant coaches and one DOBO) full timers. They may not even play 19 games this year.

P.S. Welcome aboard Coach McCray. We have young guards for you to mold. Excited to see the team develop.

I understand your point, but the cost for those 2 positions combined is likely only in the $100-125 range. The concern is recruiting, not game coaching. If we start to hear about some '21 commits it might be less of an issue, so far, I am unaware of any new offers, and several of the pre-existing offers have either committed elsewhere or opted for a prep year. The 2021 class is going to be crucial for the near term success of HC.

...and it's probably in the coach's contract how many assistants/dbos there are supposed to be.
And if that's not the case, there's still Title 9 to consider.

If Title 9 is the issue, MBB had 1.67 full time staff for each win last year. They could handle a haircut, too. It would make the staff to win ratio more respectable.🙂 I realize it's hard for HC to act unilaterally on staffing levels. Recruiters from competitor schools would pounce on it.

She was clearly the number 1 assistant last year and likely still. McCray was the number two assistant at Florida behind an Associate head coach.

Funny how they updated McCray's bio (with some very complimentary points specific to last season, when the team improved a lot); then he's out of there. Not saying anything bad happened, just sayin'
