Making no judgment on the players Nelson has recruited because for the most part many have not actually worked up a sweat in a Crusader uniform during an actual game.
So, they have "potential." But the record of actual results, so far, has been extremely poor. Well, that depends on what you mean by "record." If you choose only to look at wins and. losses, you have a point. However, the transition of personnel to a team of D 1 talent is now well along and that is a good record. Also, with last year's strange schedule against some of the top PL teams, HC did end the season on a two game win streak. Also a positive. This is the year to add wins/losses to the positive side with an improved record. Wins and losses are the record. Last partial season was indeed strange and many give him a pass on the first season. As I've posted before any coach/manager has to work with what he's got. No one can prove it one way or the other but I'd bet that Carmody would have won more games that first season - yep, they were his guys and they played according to his style. We are in agreement that this year Nelson needs to gather in a lot (my opinion, not necessarily yours) more wins.
It is up to him and his staff to prove that they can convert that potential to actual positive results. I don't want to hear how they are young, inexperienced, etc. because for the most part that is on him. (I firmly believe the flight from Mt. St. James was at least partially on him) True enough. Several players realized they could not play ay the level he expected and moved to a place where they could better fit in at their level of ability Not sure that's the case. It's convenient to say or believe they felt that they just weren't good enough. I have no inside information why each/all of them left but the large numbers lead me to believe that they couldn't all have just felt they weren't D-1 level players. Maybe the players Nelson has brought in will be much better but, again, if they win fewer games than Carmody did (a very low bar by HC standards), it is the record (wins & losses) that counts for how "good" they are as players. It is not compatible with Holy Cross values to ditch players. If he retained almost all of the guys he inherited and lost, I'd give him a much wider berth. He didn't or couldn't or, worse, wouldn't.
Bluntly, this is a "put up or shut up" season as far as I'm concerned. So far, the hiring of Nelson has not been Blossom's finest hour. Hopefully, this season will change a lot of people's minds - at least mine. The good news is that we start the season on a 2 game winning streak from last season and we better win our first game against Regis before we play BC, I'm waiting to have my mind changed this season.
