/\ I think the word "Washington" (a slaveholder) is now offensive to many folks so I am guessing DC will be in the first part of the name. Wait...what...Columbia is a reference to Columbus (a genocidal killer and also a slaveholder and also a slave trader)?
Maybe no name would be safest. As in, "The team with no name lost to the Giants 14-7 on Sunday".

Maybe they can purchase the symbol used by the artist formerly known as Prince from his estate and use that as a name.

When the Bullets (let's not go into that) moved from Baltimore to Landover, Maryland; they were called the Capital Bullets for one year.

How about the “Sargents”. They are the people that really running the show in the Army and the Marines. Fans will identify with the blue collar work ethic with the name.
The team could also be called “Washington’s Army”, or simply “THE Army”.

When the Expos moved to D.C. there was some thought of calling them the Senators. The locals didn't like it because they are some of the few Americans with no representation in the Senate

The could go with one of those trendy singular names that describe a unique feature of a city or area and go with the Washington Gridlock

Dan Snyder has finally relented and will change the name of the Washington Redskins, to the D.C. Redskins. Seriously, I like the Washington Federals as a new name. Snyder hasn't relented yet. He is being pushed by the league and a major corporate sponsor, Fedex. And major stores, e.g., Walmart, have stopped selling Redskin gear. Loss of licensing revenue is another incentive. sort of what is happening to Facebook.

Is Chiefs safe? Haven't heard that Native American nickname discussed much.

At least one nickname is safe. The Chicago Blackhawks have announced they will not be changing their name or their logo.

How about the Washington Generals? it has name recognition from all of those Globetrotters and a link to the current President (from his NJ football team - with Hershel Walker). Copyrighted by the Globetrotters so they would have to buy it from them.

I can't see anyone looking to jump on that name. The Generals were envious of the pre 2016 Cubs century of success.
There was talk about not calling the Nationals the Senators because D.C. residents aren't represented in the Senate. I think it also had to do with not wanting a name so associated with losing there's a broadway show about how bad the team was. I can't think of a sports team more associated with losing than the Washington Generals.
-----------------------
On a side note, it would have been really entertaining if Non-Alum Dave were a Generals fan. He would go hoarse complaining about the lack of travelling calls against the opponents.

Point taken. "HE JUST PULLED HIS PANTS DOWN!!! HOW COULD YOU NOT SEE THAT???"
45 would also video the Globetrotters' hijinx and send it to the head of officials.

While most people remember the Globetrotters playing the Washington Generals, they were not the only team that was the opponent of the Trotters.
The first basketball game that I attended was the Globetrotters against the Hawaiian All Stars in 1959. The star attraction with the Globetrotters was their center....Wilt Chamberlain.
Wilt played one year with the Trotters because he was not eligible to play in the NBA, which at the time had a requirement that your college class had to graduate before you became eligible to play.

The Globetrotters twice beat the NBA champion Lakers
Marques Haynes was still playing when I first saw the Globetrotters in the 70's

Interesting tidbit from that. Red Klotz played for the Baltimore Bullets, the coach was a guy named Buddy Jeannette. The name was kind of familiar to me, didn't he coach in the 60s?
The answer is "yes", and the second team he coached was also called the Baltimore Bullets, but not the same franchise (the first one folded in the mid 50s).
Jeannette took about 13-14 years off between NBA coaching jobs.

True story: when I was in high school we had a visit from some Globetrotter Lite team...I think called The Harlem Diplomats. Evidently one player's thing was halfcourt hook shots. He took 3 or 4 and missed them all. Next day before gym class a bunch of us were talking about the game. All of a sudden one of the kids grabbed a ball, went out to halfcourt and heaved a real unathletic hook shot. Swish. Kid was a hero for the rest of gym class.

The Globetrotters would play in Boston Garden and the Harlem Lite teams would barnstorm the small towns. I remember one game pitting a Globetrotter knock-off squad against the Medway public schools faculty all star team. The teachers got smoked and kept getting their shorts pulled down.
