Cross country is also cancelled at Morehouse.
If a collection of people between the ages of 18-22 are not able to run outdoors safely, then how does David Thomas -- Morehouse's president -- expect people to live on a college campus?

If campus' and dorms are open to students then this is a very hypocritical decision.

This may be the conspiracy theorist in me, but wonder if some schools who lose money each year sponsoring football are using the coronavirus as a reason to cancel the season, thereby saving on some operating expenses.

There are costs associated with cancelling the season too, however, And no revenues, paltry as they may be.

Cross country is also cancelled at Morehouse. Maybe the president of the university believes young Black men (or women) running will put them in danger. Especially if they had to wear a mask while doing it (which I don't think is humanly possible, but that's another matter). I've seen worse rationalizations made by persons in authority the last month or so.

Morehouse doesn't offer a lot of sports. The only other fall sport is Golf in which social distancing is easy.
But, yes, cross country is pretty safe although you do have to get in a van to travel to meets.

Instead they'll be playing beer pong and sharing cups at parties. Probably no risk there.

I can see the point President Thomas is making. Living in dorms attending classes, dining, etc. are inside the campus bubble they can control with social distancing, testing, contact tracing, quarantining but once the bubble is broken by opposing teams coming in or Morehouse Teams traveling and the close contact of sports, the control of the campus safety plan is broken.

If you’re wearing a mask that’s actually effective, prolonged physical exertion is not possible. Hypoxia is not a good thing.
I haven’t tried running with a mask on — I just try to maintain 6’+ when passing other people. But I know from pulling pallets of beer while wearing a mask at Target, Stop and Shop and Western Beef that breathing in your own carbon dioxide is not something that’s sustainable for a long period of time.

I hate it. I drive an extra ten miles each way to grocery shop with online ordering and contactless pickup so I don't have to breathe my own exhaust wearing a mask in the store. College Sports will only work if all players, coaches, officials, bus drivers have tested negative before the game.

What I found last week is how uncomfortable they are when the temperature goes over 80. I don't think I can officiate soccer with one; I'm sure the same would go for basketball, hockey and lacrosse....in football, some officiating positions could do it, but not all.

Williams College becomes the second NESCAC school to cancel their football season. Looks like NESCAC football is in big trouble this year:

All Williams College fall sports teams will not travel or compete. The decision affects more than football.
Expect more schools to follow. The surge in Covid cases with the demographic trending to a younger age will impact the decisions to cancel collegiate sports.
While the mortality rate may not be as high, the infection rate will still have an impact on overall health, at a level that is still unknown.

Ezekiel Elliot, obviously in the top one percent of fitness levels among all Americans, has tested positive with no symptoms. He has been an every down back and i don't recall him having any lack of stamina or burst, except maybe when he first came back from hold out or injury. I have made a mental note to watch and see if his performance is effected in any way from just testing positive. I am hoping not to observe any negative effects.

Williams is in the catbird seat. They risk no financial harm in cancelling fall sports. Football revenue is a rounding error in their overall financial stability. TOSU, Alabama, etc. may not be as fortunate. All States will have multi-billion dollar shortfalls in their budgets* so these power five schools can't really look to their State Governments to make up the revenue losses from football.
*Actually New Hampshire with no state income or sales tax might be an outlier. As long as people drink and they keep taxing property owners into the ground they may be alright.

Get the kids on campus early and any cases will do its thing and they'll be ready for the season.
