www.capitalgazette.com/sports/navy/ac-cs-navy-reaction-patriot-league-announcement-20200713-ug23dlmaujfpndxtztyvzbrule-story.htmlThe article looks at Navy men's soccer putting together a schedule for the fall. Does the Patriot League decision prevent HC from attempting to put together a schedule with local schools, similar to Navy? I can understand Navy and Army being allowed to play football since these programs are in a different division, but it seems odd that the academies are granted an exception for all other fall sports. I believe that student-athletes can still gather for training sessions based on conditions in regard to the pandemic. Would it be possible to hold a few competitions in the fall? HC could probably put together a "minimal" schedule against D1 opponents in Olympic sports without leaving Massachusetts. It will be interesting to see what the other regional D1 conferences do in the coming few weeks. You would figure that the Patriot League would follow the Ivies, but what about the MAAC, A-10, America East, & NEC? I wonder when these conferences will make announcements about the fall after the PL and Ivy League have announced their decisions. Will all (or most) conferences follow suit and cancel fall sports? While health during this pandemic is most important for all involved, I feel bad for all the hard working student-athletes across the board, especially the talented HC kids!

At the end of the day, I think you have to look at it this way: each institution has to make the decision in the best interests of its students and athletes. Sure, a conference can make a wholesale decision but they'll only do that as long as all of the schools are on board. I can tell you with complete honesty that since the spring when the shutdown happened, all conferences have gone through a multitude of scenarios that ran the gamut from a full season to no season to truncated season to some of the league playing while others decide not to compete.
What you have in the PL is 8 schools saying they're shutting down competition for the fall, and letting the academies do their own thing. Let them. Who is to say that HC or BU know what's best for Army and Navy, and vice versa in this case. If more conferences shut down, Army and Navy won't have many options for games anyway - let them figure it out. If it's untenable, they'll adjust.

The Patriot League announcement, which the superintendents of the USMA, and USNA signed, allows both academies to have a fall sports season. The Dept. of Defense has priority with respect to COVID testing, so that is not an issue. With respect to spring, its quite possible that the cadets and midshipmen will be among the first Americans to be vaccinated, given that military personnel are apparently in the first tranche for vaccination. And if USMA and USNA played fall sports in the fall, would the NCAA allow them to also play those same sports in the spring , assuming the PL has a spring season for fall sports?

Big East announced they will only play each other this fall!! Good question about the spring?? If the Ivies and PL are the only conferences not playing what will be the rules on spring seasons.

According to the Hartford Courant, the BE has cancelled OOC competition for the fall. ^^^ That's one shoe. ^^^ That's the other shoe.

And if USMA and USNA played fall sports in the fall, would the NCAA allow them to also play those same sports in the spring , assuming the PL has a spring season for fall sports?Upon looking at Army and Navy's athletic sites, there are currently no schedules posted for fall sports besides football. It's my guess that the PL gave them the waiver primarily to allow the two to have the Army-Navy "STAR" competitions in sports like soccer and cross country. With the CAA, A-East, Big East, A-10, MEAC and Ivy closing up shop and others in the region likely to follow, its unlikely that the academies would have many options as far as non-conference schedules in these sports. I think that yes the NCAA would, for example, let Army and Navy play PL soccer schedules and run in the PL Cross Country Championship, even if the Army-Navy match-ups had already been played in October or November. I DON'T think more extreme exceptions would be made. If Georgetown on its own decided to play and was able to schedule 4 OOC football games this fall and then decided they wanted to play a PL slate in spring, I doubt that would be permitted.
