The Holy Cross volleyball team has earned the 2019-20 United State Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the AVCA announced on Monday.
The award, which has been given out since 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a yearlong grade-point average of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. The award factors in the GPA of all players that played at least one set during the 2019 season.
As a team, the Crusaders averaged a 3.46 GPA during the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters. Juniors Rachel Harding, Clare Honan and Sophie VanSeveren each recorded a 4.0 GPA during the spring semester.
This is the second time in program history and the first time since 2014 that the Crusaders have earned the award. Print Friendly Version
3.46 team GPA is impressive.

I am guessing if you moved the GPA decimal point one spot to the left, the GPA number would be higher than the winning percentage number for most HC teams. In this case it would be .346 to .167.

I too get frustrated sometimes when HC's teams fail to win many games, but I love reading about the academic accomplishments of our student athletes. To have a school the size of HC competing with so many teams at the D1 level, and to do it with people like the young women on the volleyball team, is remarkable. When the web site posts info about incoming athletes I enjoy reading about their athletic accomplishments in high school, but I especially love seeing things like "National Honor Society" etc. Like other alums I like to think that we can win more without diluting our academic standards, although I'm not sure this is possible, but in the meantime I feel proud reading about the volleyball team's academic accomplishments (3 with a 4.0 GPA last semester!).
