35 Negro League players have been enshrined in the Hall of Fame--that's quite a few players for a set of leagues that ended in 1950 or 1951. Compare to 235 MLB players, many of whom should not, in my opinion, be in the Hall. I'll have to dig into John Donaldson to see what kind of a career he had.

He had a l-o-n-g career. 1908-1949. That's two Tom Brady careers.

Nice comparison, longsuffering...and he had to overcome more than a few "inconveniences" along the way.

I frequent a Thai restaurant not far from my house and always end up talking horse racing or baseball with the owner, an African-American guy. Several visits ago I noticed he had put up a photo plaque of Satchell Paige which a customer had given him. As it turns out the owner's uncle had played/coached in the Negro Leagues for many years--a nice distinction to have in the family.

Seeing Satchell Page pitch at an advanced age (whatever it was...never a certain number) and bring it better than most MBL pitchers at that time is one of the sports highlights of my life. It is something I will never forget.

He had 275 hits and 5 HRs according to baseball-reference.com? 23-20 as a pitcher across five seasons (1916-1921)? What am I missing?

It is something I will never forget. Remember Charlie Finley, ever the promoter, providing Satchell with a rocking chair in the bullpen?

Yup. Charlie knew how to milk a situation for all it was worth.

It's blocked. I went to look for his stats to try and find his baseball accomplishments.

Check out: johndonaldson.bravehost.com33 years pitching. 413 wins. 5,081 strikeouts. 14 no-hitters. Two perfect games...wow! He struck out 18 batters against a semi-pro team at the age of 13. He whiffed 10 or more batters in a game 234 times. He won 73 percent of his starts and 92 percent of those were complete games. "Nobody has really put it all together," Gorton says. "He ended up playing in 683 different cities that we've found so far. The reason that nobody knows much about him today, is that his career was scattered all over the place. If he had spent 15 years with the Pittsburgh Crawfords or any other Negro League franchise, people could pretty much ascertain that's where he was. But this guy was all over the place." (Donaldson only played about two part-time seasons in the better-documented Negro National League -- which was formed in 1920. He was one of the founders of the Kansas City Monarchs -- it's even said that he came up with the name "Monarchs" -- but team owner J.L. Wilkinson sent the left-hander back on the road to make more money for him and the Monarchs).
