Why? What's going on especially with few students on campus.

Actually, I'm guessing perhaps where they will administer covid tests for the few kids allowed on campus. Surprised Phreek hasn't already given a detailed story about it. I'd guessed either COVID testing station, or outdoor dining space. I will add a third.... a tent for celebrating both the completion of The Jo, and the signing of the beam that will mark topping out of the PPAC. The ironworkers seemed to be taking their time installing the remaining pieces of architectural metal, and from the webcam, there is one steel beam left. Topping out is marked by having lots of people -- workers, benefactors, students, TPTB, faculty, etc. sign that last beam before it is hoisted. The beam is traditionally adorned with an American flag and a small Christmas tree. Given the COVID limits on numbers who can gather the celebration may be sequenced over several days, and I'm guessing restrictions preclude using Hogan ballroom, or limit its use. And its quite possible that the tent will still be there in November. _____________________________ I'll post a construction update here, rather than in the appropriate threads. > More trees planted to day along the path from Hogan to The Jo. From their appearance, these look to be ornamentals, perhaps Japanese cherry trees, which might be marking the way to the future site of the Japanese tea house! > For the PPAC, the contractor appears to be installing a small concrete mix plant on-site, at the NE corner near Easy St. My guess is that this is for specialty concrete, with various additives, such as plasticizers. Not enough cubic yards of this concrete are needed daily to justify shutting down a regular mix plant, and/or the concrete has to be made and poured quickly, and can't be hauled from a mix plant to HC by truck.

Thanks. I was at and signed the Luth beam but I'm making a pretty safe bet I won't get an invitation to this one.

There were students using the tent for outdoor dining last week.

Been watching the tent off and on for days. Students walking around the Hoval, I haven't seen a one go under the tent and certainly missed Phreek's observation of some dining there. I am assuming the line running roughly N/W-S/E to the walk is an electrical line. And, yes, I can now make out benches just inside the tent. I have to assume this will be for some kind of formal event not just ad hoc meals. C'mon, Phreek, tap your sources.

My only source is three students who departed the tent, grab and go food containers in hand, which they then discarded in the black trash receptacle on the side of the walk leading up to Hogan. Only three sources of meals on campus: Kimball, Cool Beans (inside Hogan), and the Lobby Shop, which is also in Hogan.

I miss the old caf on the second floor of Hogan.
Was there when the Fifth Dimension walked through to grab some dinner before the concert in the Field House. Also met Joe “Jelly Bean” Bryant, when Jack Donahue had him on campus for a recruiting visit.
The upper campus dining experience now cannot match how the old caf was the epicenter during the late 60’s into the “70s.

There are three large tents, two on the Kimball Quad, one on the Hoval. These are for dining, studying.
Worcester Dept of Public Health ruled that students could not eat inside Kimball, even their grab and go meals. HC is appealing this decision, and the college's future plans are predicated on the restriction being lifted.
This ruling was a significant factor in HC changing to remote-learning, because this made for a terrible dining experience if 2500 students were on campus.

Yeah, I was on the Zoom and got my question answered. I have still not seen one student or anyone else enter the tent on the Hoval but admit I don't watch 24/7. Lights on inside the Hoval tent as I write this.

Under the current restrictions living on any campus this year is definitely sub optimal. The only reason I can concern for a student to not live at home this year is to get away from Mom, Dad and their siblings. A WPA work camp would seem to have provided more flexibility regarding association with peers.
