According to an article in the Athletic,(pay site) the NCAA Oversight Committee is recommending this Nov 25 (Original date was Nov 10) date which is expected to be finalized on Sept 16

Random thoughts on the date
- Many schools are sending kids home for Thanksgiving not to return until mid-January. Based on the Nov 25 start date, that would mean less opportunity for the athletes to go wild at non socially distant parties
- In an interview just yesterday, Dr Fauci said that most medical people anticipate a vaccine in November and December. A vaccine would go a long way to having sports - Some people, recognizing the importance of hope, sell overly optimistic messages. I don't think Dr Fauci is one of those people - Even with advance production of promising vaccines, I don't think low mid major athletes will get the vaccine on day #1
- Things are likely to start without fans, and when fans are allowed, it will be very inconsistent as rules vary from state to state. Right now in MA, you can't have more than 25 people in a building. Something would have to give on that, or HC will be playing their home games in a less strict state

I think that healthy young people will be the last people to get the vaccine

Vaccinations will be administered in a prioritized pecking order. First to receive are health care personnel and first responders. Vaccination will likely require two shots, administered 3-4 weeks apart. There probably will not be enough doses available to extend vaccinations to other cohorts before January 1. Teachers ,including those at universities, are assigned a fairly high priority. Young healthy adults have low priority, so maybe not vaccinated before April/May. ^^^ This is based on two vaccine approvals this fall, and the manufacturing pipeline for these two. If other vaccines are approved, then more doses will b e available. Almost certainly, no spectators for hoops. Indoor setting, fair-poor ventilation in many college arenas, lots of shouting, screaming, 'YOU!! YOU!!! YOU!!!!!' if fans were in attendance.

The late November start date for games is the way it should be. In fact I can remember when starting games that late was the norm. I love college hoops as much as the next person but now on a normal year games would begin around November 10th. College football is in the heart of their season during that time. The season now is too drawn out. I would be in favor of making the late November start date the new normal.

Not a big fan of the concocted events that dominate November these days. If they started college ball at the end of exams and the Final Four was at the end of April, I could live with that. Have one semester (and the summer, though it wouldn't help Holy Cross much) where basketball does not interfere w/academics at all.

Dan Gavitt, the chair of NCAA hoops, said that some teams could play as few as 12-13 games(thinking of the Pac12 and Ivy which will not start until Jan 1) and others could play as many as 26-28. I presume the Selection Committee would then select teams, some of whom will have played twice as many games as others. Whatever the result, the low and mid majors will get screwed.,

To our friends from Holy Cross. The PL must move after the Sept 16 announcement to allow Bball to be practiced. Our esteemed president ( who hasn't a clue), is chairperson of the PL president's council. Perhaps a little email reminder to her that the clock is ticking to begin practices would be a great way to get the" ball rolling." Her name is Allison Byerly.

Regular practices, under NCAA rules, cannot start until about October 3. Right now the most any team can do is have some conditioning drills and a few hours of skills instruction each week.

Not sure if this applies to football, basketball, or other sports. With the use of the word "big", clearly a positive announcement is coming
