HCHoops posted this link on the MM thread. However, I felt it needed it's own thread.
A very well written piece by MM on the current situation.......https://www.nba.com/raptors/malcolm-miller-bigger-basketball

Malcolm’s heart is in the right place and he’s definitely had life experiences that need to be shared with those of us who have not had them so we can better appreciate his point of view. My sincere hope for Malcolm and all other smart, young people who want to make the world a better place is that they start to put their energy toward finding solutions that will make things better rather than just telling us about the problems over and over without talking to (and listening to) people with different experiences and backgrounds and ideas to find those answers.

Well said about understanding Malcolm’s perspective. I believe that Malcolm recommended for all to vote.

The administration just discontinued diversity training in all federal agencies, guess there's not much sense talking to those guys about racial injustice because they obviously believe there is none. Hope all take Malcom's advice vote its the only hope for change.

Hope all take Malcom's advice vote its the only hope for change. I would recommend sampling the cancelled training before passing judgment on whether it was good or bad. Cancelling that type of training does not necessarily equate to believing there is no racial injustice. These all-or-nothing type statements are the problem in the media and in Washington. And I recognize this is about to go down the political rabbit-hole so I’m out for fear of winding up on Dean Wormer’s list.

I am a fan of MM, but not all of his choices...like this political piece which could be a talking point for the DNC. I read the article in light of your comment. Except for one comment most of the article was not about politics but about the racism that he and his family have experienced. Once could say that your comment was more political than his article. I'll leave it at that to avoid a political discussion.

Hope all take Malcom's advice vote its the only hope for change. to be fair, they discontinued a specific type of diversity training that was particularly divisive in creating dichotomy of oppressor and victim based solely on skin color. the reality is far more complex and is driven far more powerfully by economic factors, which are often associated with race, but neither exclusively (far fewer opportunities for poor white people than rich black people [like malcolm]) nor causally (many poor people of all races overcome struggles with a positive, empowered attitude). sadly, this type of training offers no solutions and leaves all parties disempowered as victims or oppressors based solely upon the color of skin with which they were born. if malcolm has a family, his children will be privileged beyond those almost anywhere else in the world and i hope he teaches that reality to them unlike many peers in the nba without the benefit of the critical thinking skills to which he was exposed, although not currently employing, during his time at holy cross.

To disagree with your last statement, I believe that Malcolm is indeed successfully applying those critical thinking skills in this piece

When I taught sociology, I clearly remember seeing the percent of people with inherent biases as 100%. Not all are negative since some can be positive but it is still bias none the less.
America's "unique" contribution to slavery was making slaves of whole families, including children. It was almost impossible to escape this clear racial division but some did and (at least in NJ) there were black men who owned black slaves. They were clearly an exception, as were the slave owners who treated their slaves well (and some did...certainly better than factory workers were treated the north). However, these do not in any way mitigate a practice that was, in its essence, brutally inhuman. I believe that one human being should never "own" another - regardless of circumstance.
PS: "Training" and education have done little in the past to reduce racial divisions. However, "experience" has been shown to be a good teacher. In WWII there were black soldiers who faced less racial prejudice as they worked more closely with white comrades. Each of the studies of integration in the Army reinforced this belief.

Guys - it's not bad at this point but feel I need to nip this in the bud. Can we give the political bent to this a rest before it goes to hell in a hand basket. Malcolm presented his point of view based on his experience. Whether you agree with it or not and the reasoning used in it, he is describing his experience. And yes, there's a political element to what he is saying but, once again many of you seem to fail to grasp the concept that I don't want politics discussed here because - it will inevitably degenerate into tit-for-tat partisan talking points which can be heard on Fox, MSNBC, or any number of internet outlets (and pretty much every single response after the original post is heading down that slippery slope)
- none of what's written here will change anyone's mind because all you're doing is one upping the other, not truly listening to one another.
Malcolm's opinion piece (politics and all) is worth posting (and me leaving) here for 2 reasons
- It is pretty clearly his own work in his own voice primarily describing his experience and how it links him to a much larger discussion/movement (albeit political) in our country.
- As an HC basketball alum it is of interest to the sports and Holy Cross fans that this board is intended for
Please stop the qualifiers and rebuttals to the piece and to one another.
And whether self restraint or just a holiday weekend, thank you to several of the regulars who have engaged in this sort of back and forth for staying out of it.
Carry on.
