Was surprised to see Men's track & field bite the dust at W&M. Very strong program.

Has anyone read an analysis of how much D-1 athletic budgets have increased over say the last ten years? Was listening to someone on Bloomberg radio who noted that college athletic (including non-football sports) budgets were on a unsustainable upward path even before COVID and that sustained overspending is at the heart of the current problems.

At the February HCAA meeting it was reported that the BoT athletics committee was addressing the question... is 25% of the student body engaged in varsity sports the right the amount.

I've been a broken record about Four coaches and a DOBO for 13 or so basketball players. I've also noted the trend of so many suits on the bench you are starting to sometimes see a second row behind the bench for team hanger-on-ers. I also am regularly blown away by the amount of HC Athletics staffers on the website who each do some of the tasks Frank Mastrandrea (sp?) used to handle himself.

How much of the budget increases are travel-related caused by the many changes in conference affiliation that make no geographic sense?

I did not like the outcome and the overall quality of the body of work from Frank’s department. In his defense, maybe he was way over stretched regarding the tasks that he was responsible to complete for an organization that needed to be in a 21st century multi media platform operation. The job he was originally hired rapidly evolved without the proper administration support for him.
Until recently, H C was behind our competitors in the organization of the athletic department, operating in a 1980’s, model, while everyone else had moved into the 21st century, For example, not having an apparent cohesive marketing and communications strategy that was easily identifiable. Establishing Crusader Sports Properties was a concept that was long overdue. ACTP I am sure has more insight than I can provide.
The skills required for an AD are now significantly different from when a former FBI agent or a Basketball coach were hired for the job of an AD. So has the skills and the role significantly evolved from the job and department of what was formerly called the SID.

I remember Rich Lewis (and family) from his days as SID. We often worked together in the field house. He was well suited to the job then and got HC some national publicity when his releases were picked up by AP or UPI. Today, I am not sure what the SID job (if such even exists) entails.

Speaking of marketing, this pandemic gives HC Athletics the opportunity to mark it's marketing staff expense to the market. I like that approach better than dropping one or more sports. One employee in marketing should be more than enough right now, especially since you can contract out various functions as needed.

Rich Lewis was professional and represented HC well with the media. The last time I remember having a conversation with Rich was at Madison Square Garden during the 1976 NIT Quarterfinals against North Carolina State, I lost track of him after he left HC. Believe he went to Providence College.
As for the role of SID, at HC it is job assigned to Charles Bare, who is the Director of Media Relations. Charles Bare is responsible for Football, Men’s Basketball, M/W Lacrosse, Men’s Soccer, M/W Golf, M/W Rowing. Media Relations has two additional staff members, Sarah Kirkpatrick, who is responsible for for 9 teams, (Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, M/W Track, M/W Cross Country, Secondary for Football) and Curtis Stoychoff, who has responsibility for 9 teams (M/W Ice Hockey, Women’s Soccer, Field Hockey, Softball, M/W Swimming, M/W Tennis).
With the number of varsity teams at HC, Media Relations is a job beyond one person to do well at a D1 level. Too many teams to be solely responsible.
Other roles regarding media at HC include Content and Digital Strategy by Associate AD, Allison Crandall. Video and Network Production, is the responsibility of Elijah Gonzalez and Creative Content Producer, Matt Carroll.
Derrick Light is the Director of Athletic Marketing and Fan Experience. Scott Beaudry is the Manager of Athletic Marketing.

Rich also had a wife who won a number of times on the betting slips for college football. She did it by picking the Ivies as her starting point and, even with the many upsets the Ivy League back in the 60s and 70s, she defied the odds quite well.

This quote on the folly of chasing a FCS playoff birth or an invite to the NCAA hoops tournament struck a chord with me--"Too many egos of BOV. We would be better off to simply play great football and kick ass against Ivy League and Patriot League teams."

Forgot about Jimmye Laycock. Took the BC job before Coughlin did, then called them up the next day and said "no thanks". Stayed at W&M for 27 years after that.
Neck and neck with Jimy Williams for the weirdest derivation of the name "Jimmy".

Best quote I remember from Jimy Williams is him receiving a challenging question after a Red Sox game from a young cub reporter. Jimy asked him where he was from and he said he worked for a weekly paper in Braintree, MA. Jimy responded: "I'm a Brain Tree Surgeon," in his usual drawl.

Does Jimmye win because it's his real name? James is the real name of the other men.

Interesting update from W&M: The university received notice of intent to sue on the grounds that the announced plan, including the cuts and the associated roster adjustments in other sports, would not fully meet Title IX standards. Accordingly, the university is reinstating Women's Gymnastics, Women's Swimming and Women's Volleyball, which will continue as Division I varsity sports.
