In 1945(said it was old) The N.Y. World Telegram chose an all Catholic HS team. HC had 2 of the 5 best NYC 1945 Catholic school players on their ‘47 champs. Only one was selected on the WT team. 1- Name the 2 players. 2- Name the one selected. 3- Name the one not selected. 4- Explain why he was not chosen. Bonus- Name their high schools.

A wild guess. Perhaps Kaftan was Greek Orthodox and therefore, not chosen because he wasn't Catholic?
Which reminds me of The Wire:
"Spiros: He knows my name, but my name is not my name. And you... to them you're only "The Greek."
The Greek: And, of course, I'm not even Greek."

Was the one that was chosen Dermie O'Connell (Cardinal Hayes)? Bingo ! And the bonus also Kaftan’s high school should not be hard we have at least one regular poster who is also an alum But the hard one is why The Greek was not included.

Found this 2007 article by Dave Anderson in the NY Times. Talks about the NY talent on the 1947 team. It may also gives a clue as to why Kaftan may not have been on that All-NYC Catholic League team ... it was his first year playing basketball in HS. I read the article so I won’t reveal the HS. www.nytimes.com/2007/03/15/sports/ncaabasketball/15anderson.html

As the article says, the ‘47 season was his second year on the team. He had a terrific season, one of the best in the city.

I wondered if political correctness would allow a high school in NYC named for Andrew Jackson to remain with it's name unscathed. It turns out the school was closed by the City in 1994. At it's nadir in the late 70's, a heroin processing factory in the school's basement was shut down.

The school that replaced it is called Campus Magnet.

Good. Andrew Jackson is not a unifying historical figure.

Good. Andrew Jackson is not a unifying historical figure. The list of such historical figures is dwindling rapidly. Fed was created under AJ?

Kaftan’s Xavier team did not play in any league. The World Telegram deemed that this made him ineligible, though the accompanying article said that he would have made the team if Xavier had been in a league. The NYT article that you posted had the interesting fact that all HC’s points in the championship game were scored by NYC HS players.
