It’s very obvious UMass is having a tough time getting a schedule- this might be a one or two game season for them This is incorrect. The team is under NCAA rules of in semester practice limits and announced on Sept 21st. We need time to get the players ready for hitting and limit injuries. The plan was/is 3-6 games and starting in Mid October. This was to give the players and coaching staff experience as we are very young and up from 56 scholarships able to play to high 60's. As important is the players went to the AD saying they have done everything that you have asked and want to play! Seen some every other week schedules and playing 3-4 games seems right. We are basically on-call to fill-in and we knew there will be opportunities. Yes purplehaze, it's more difficult without a conference, but going as expected. The team is mostly freshmen and sophomores as Whipple left the cupboard pretty bare. Will add in as there are more Independents, there are others that are in play, Army, Liberty and BYU. Notre Dame is playing an all AAC schedule this year and NMSU and UConn are not playing. All FBS conferences are playing.

Wonder how that happened?

Is the game with Georgia Southern part of a series that will see a return meeting in Amherst? The Masslive piece on the game indicated that UMass will receive 60k for the game which their AD said would cover about half its travel costs. It was my understanding that money was only offered for guaranteed buy games as costs such as travel would be reciprocal in a series. Is this game just a one off?

Wonder how that happened? Because the Missouri Valley Conference is playing a spring season. They already have a schedule and everything, unlike the PL which is merely paying lip service to the idea of a spring season. NDSU played Central Arkansas in what was a one off OOC game.

No, think we should have negotiate for full travel expenses, but will be paid 60k or about half the travel expenses. It's a very cheap buy game for them. Our schedules are mostly filled and we have a lot of cancelled games from this year that we will honor if they want to re-scheduled in the future. Regarding NDSU playing a game, it was a smart move. They get more hours with practicing and full pad hitting. Then compete in the shorten Spring Season. There was talk on the James Madison board about doing the same, but nothing happened.

UMass is a buyer not a seller, take what you can get and later in the season if teams have to cancel due to Covid, UMass might even be the beneficiary of a bidding war between teams that would have an empty week or more without a healthy opponent.

IIRC, the JMU coach received the okay from the CAA to play OOC in the fall, and he was intent on pursuing it, so I assume he never found enough opponents to make it worthwhile. Again IIRC, JMU has high ticket revenue, which vanishes with empty stands.

We are a 28.5 to 30 point dog in our first game and maybe starting a walk-on as QB, 7 true freshmen on offense and believe the defense will look the same. Very young and inexperience. We really need as many games as possible to give the guys and coaches experience. Like this quote from a poster: Depth chartRoll those dice. My prediction is Georgia Southern 41- UMass 24, but my heart is hoping for a close game. Fight Massachusetts First depth chart of the season for UMass Senior walk-on Mike Fallon is listed first at the QB position, however there is the -OR- designation with both Josiah Johnson and Will Koch, meaning it could in theory be any of the three that takes the first snap Saturday

Vandy and Mizzou have been PPD this weekend for Covid and Florida had to stop football activities on Tuesday due to virus issues even though the head coach and governor want the whole stadium opened this weekend against LSU.

I seriously doubt UMass is ready to play especially with so many frosh on the 2-deep - this idea of playing might end up being a very bad idea (and a financially expensive one)

How do you get ready with that many freshmen, expect to play and gain experience. If we these guys stick together, we actually could go bowling in a few years. Game NotesGame has been moved to ESPN2 - still 4PM.
