crusader12, was this comment really necessary? I am sure there are those (and I am one) who would disagree with your broad brush pronouncement. If you wanted him gone...and he now will be...when you have gotten what you clearly wanted, why not take the high road? He is trolling, spouting generalities. He probably won't like his successor either..

The Joyce Contemplative Center is a gem to the Holy Cross experience and a jewel in the legacy of Fr. B. I applaud the dedication of the Joyce Family to Alma Mater. If you can, when available, attend a retreat at the center.
I for one, believe that Fr. B has faced monumental challenges that many college presidents would have wilted under the pressure. He has provided calm, strength, dedication and most importantly decency in leading Alma Mater through turbulent times. I will miss my conversations with him.

And one major announcement still to come, which he hinted at. Will not be athletics-related, So what’s your guess on the major announcement? Do hope we are thinking BIG in terms of honoring Dr Fauci. Lots of big time donors have praised his work and service to our nation. I thought it might be that, but from what Fr. B. said, this is a major initiative to provide increased financial aid. For reasons still to be discerned, the initiative wasn't incorporated into the capital campaign, where $60+ million was raised specifically for fin aid. It may be the initiative is being funded by a significant gift, which is large enough to be stand-alone and applauded rather than being folded in with other capital campaign gifts. So the search can begin to identify an alumnus, or a great friend of HC, who has that kind of money.

With the impending change in the presidency, there also may be changes in the structure of key administrative operations of the college.

Jesuit or not, I would really like to see a Holy Cross alum become the next president. I was never convinced that Fr. B, Fr. McF or Fr. Reedy quite "got" Holy Cross. I know that potentially opens up the whole Fr. Brooks/Big East discussion but . . . . . . please don't.

In our conversations I was always impressed by Father's brightness while at the same time being humble. Thank you for your service. You, dear Father have been a splendid example of a "man for others." May the road... ...rise to meet you?

Fr. B is 69, not 71 - after his year sabbatical, I get the feeling he may want to relocate back to the northwest from where he came ‘on loan’ a long time ago When I began my term as president at the age of 62, I was older than most beginning presidents; and now nine years later, Is there a birther on the board to get to the bottom of this?

I'm 69, born in 1951. School website says Fr. B. was born in 1949. He has to be 71 (or 72) by the time his retirement date arrives.

HC, tuition free for all? It would be wonderful if the school could do this. 3,000 students paying $50,000 tuition = $150,000,000 Distribution of 4.5% of endowment value annually to finance $150 million of tuition requires an endowment of $3.3 billion, give or take. Thank you Warren Buffet.

Based on an early in his tenure conversation I had with him, he was a year younger than me and I just turned 72. He is 71. And, he was born in Canada and only became a U.S. citizen during his tenure at Holy Cross because I gave him a hard time about whether he had his green card or not.

I'm a Canadian...' A few years later at the commissioning he smiled and said to me '... I get now, I'm an American citizen...' He has never missed any of the events to which we invited him.

Thank you Warren Buffet. Without trying to derail too much further, Phreek has it mostly accurate. I assumed a 5% distribution in my numbers to make the math simpler (multiply by 20 instead of 22.2...) Assuming you include Room/Board/Fees in this, you'd need to replace roughly $136,226,000 in income (rounded to the nearest thousand) according to the 2019 Statement of Activities (basically an income statement for non-profits). If you wanted to fund that through an endowment, you'd have to have $2,724,520,000 in that fund. In that case, the HC endowment, which was $785,900,000 as of FYE 2019, would have to grow to somewhere around $3.5 billion in total. However, that still would not cover all the college's expenses in 2019. That total was $191,729,000 (rounded to the nearest thousand) for 2019. To cover that, HC's endowment would have to be $3,834,580,000. HC would need to raise somewhere around $3 billion in new endowment money to accomplish this. This all assumes costs don't rise, which is obviously unreasonable, especially if we want to join the Big East . I would certainly love for this to happen and would be one of the first to donate, even though my donation wouldn't be anything more than a rounding error. As penance for derailing further, I'll post some thoughts about Fr. B from the perspective of someone who was a student during his tenure later when I have more time.

I have complained since the start of the campaign that it did not dedicate a sufficient portion to growing the endowment, understanding that the endowment is what makes strong need based financial aid possible. I hope that PP is right and that there will be a major announcement about financial aid. While a $3 billion gift is fun to think about, raising $200 million to:
1. eliminate student loans from the financial aid package 2. return to full need blind admissions
might be a more reasonable goal.

Wonder what it would take (not possible I'm sure, but interesting to know) to emulate Harvard's financial aid policies?
Would have a ton of ramifications, including to athletics.

I’ve got it figured out now—why there’s confusion over his age. If he was Canadian and is now a US citizen we have to allow for the conversion from the metric system.

I wish Fr B all the best
I would like to see our next president have the letters MBA, or JD, or even MD after his/her name.
We need a strong, living in the real world, leader who will promote Holy Cross with unabashed vigor and rein in the too powerful faculty.
Don't kid yourselves, elementary schools, high schools and you beloved alma mater are closed because of the power of the FACULTIES.

He gets credit for a successful campaign and is responsible for Luth, the Jo, and the Performing Arts building. That will be his legacy. And one major announcement still to come, which he hinted at. Will not be athletics-related, I didn’t get any hint of some major announcement in his letter. Was there something different in the video?
