Without commenting either way on the new Justice I agree completely that it is a good thing to have nominees from other law schools/regions. There are many brilliant candidates out there.

For those looking for diversity, the next topic may be those who take issue with 2/3rds of the Court being Catholic.

Oh, I've definitely heard comments (not positive) from acquaintances about six observant Catholics being on SCOTUS.

Once they say "observant" Catholics, you kind of know their position. I find gthsat term as loaded as "recovering" Catholics.

I believe that Justice Thomas became a Protestant after his second marriage.

Perhaps because of my obvious interest in the subject, I've always considered Justice Thomas to be a "Holy Cross guy" not a Yalie. In like fashion, Justice Barrett is from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. She went to trade school at Notre Dame. She lives in the Midwest now but I have to think there is still more New Orleans in her than Midwest. I went to trade school at Northeastern University but I've never once considered myself anything other than a HC guy. I have lived in the Midwest for many years but at heart I'm still a New Englander. I don't think Rhodes was mentioned very often if at all in her hearings and seldom in the media--maybe it's different with Law and Medicine than with other professions or jobs.

One has to remember that Justice Barrett not only attended Law School for 3 years at Notre Dame (graduating first in her class), but she also was an extraordinarily popular teacher at Notre Dame’s Law School for an additional 15 years. That might explain the close association with ND. (As opposed to her undergraduate school).

I’m sure most of us here are pleased that there finally is a justice who did not attend Harvard or Yale - and from the Midwest to boot - some balance on those fronts is a good thing, IMO Sandra Day O’Connor did not attend either Harvard or Yale, and was from the west. Undergrad and Law at Stanford. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandra_Day_O%27Connor

/\ She’s not on the Supreme Court...there certainly have been justices in the past who didn’t attend H/Y — inc. 3 from University of Michigan Law School BTW...ACB is the only current non-H/Y attendee.

I fully understand there have been non HY justices on the court, for example William O Douglas and John Paul Stevens. The previous comment seemed to imply that there has been a strict HY succession to the Supreme Court throughout its history. I pointed out Justice O’Connor as she was the most recent Justice not part of the HY alumni network. I was taking the statement literally regarding the history of the court.

I have a bigger problem with the fact that most of the justices (and increasingly even Courts of Appeals judges) have spent little to no time in the private practice of law.

Let's remember the "air force" started as the Army Air Corps and the Army is mentioned in there somewhere. The cage of name may be unconstitutional, but the army pre-dates the constitution and is not IIRC.

ARMY is in there (and every part of that army is included and need not be mentioned).
I agree that privacy is not mentioned directly anywhere in there.

Additionally, when I was at ND, we considered Indiana to be the Northernmost Southern state.

Rhodes was only mentioned I saw when the Press Secretary mistakenly referred to Justice Barrett as a "Rhodes Scholar". But then again she went to Harvard Law, so her world view might be myopic.
