The fact remains....a 42/58, M/F class at HC doesn't bode well moving forward..... troubling I’m sure admissions has some sort of a gender (if one can still use that word) ratio in mind when selecting for admission. I doubt 42-58 was it...but that may not be a major miss given general trends and possible Covid complications. FWIW Fordham’s ratio was 41-59 this year. Note: A quick Google search for most current total undergraduate gender ratio (USN&WR) tells me Fordham is 43-57, Colgate is 45-55, PC is 46-54, BC is 47-53, and we are 47-53.

Might the lack of an engineering major be a factor in the gender ratio. Nationally NROTC allots 85% of its scholarships to STEM majors with a significant preference for engineering majors.

The fact remains....a 42/58, M/F class at HC doesn't bode well moving forward..... troubling What is it that troubles you? Will male athletes be less talented because there are more women at the Cross? The alumnae I know appear to be just as passionate about their alma mater as my all-male classmates from back in '67.

What is the ratio for all colleges combined? It’s certainly not 50-50
Edit: just saw one source online that says it is 56-44 women vs men

Women now outnumber men across the board on college campuses. That fact was even a square tonight on Jeopardy.

Interesting article. Pardon my regional bias but talk of Hampton, Howard, Bill and Mary joining the P.L. makes me wish B.U. and Northeastern had not dropped football and we could add the Howlin' Huskies if we needed another member.

‘Another Football-Only Member? While we're talking about it, there's always been a line of discussion that the Patriot League's affection for William & Mary, Richmond, and Villanova is unrequited.’ I don’t see a reason why these teams would step down to PL football at this point so ‘unrequited’ may continue as a descriptor for quite a while.

The Virginia schools are attractive for their football and academic heritage but not for travel below the Mason Dixon line for league games, imo. 'Nova fits into the P.L. geographic footprint better.

The writer doesn't like Bucknell very much; first, in his odd-number-of-teams proposed football league, he casts them in the Southern division; second, they get screwed on the "rivalry games". I do commend him/her for raising the point about LC/LU being protected as a season-ender and no other game is.

Nycrusader was certainly not complaining about the on-campus ratio during his HC student bachelor days...

This was a great read, and I learned a lot. I like the idea of adding Hampton and Howard, along with Bill and Mary, and having the two divisions!

Or...Holy Cross can leave the PL for the CAA and trade with W&M!

The PL could use some rivalries outside of the Lehigh Valley. Can someone help me understand the rivalry between HC and Colgate? Frankly, I didn’t know it existed.

No rivalry that I know of (reasons including that they are far away, they are secular, and we have no significant applicant overlap with them). I think Colgate has a decent rivalry with Cornell. We do play against Colgate in PL sports. If we could convince PC to join the PL (and play football) we might have a very nice rival on our hands.

Going way back (even pre-PL), there have been some epic battles in football.

Going way back (even pre-PL), there have been some epic battles in football. we once considered Dartmouth* a natural rival; Colgate maybe... just not on the scale of BC *Big Green [the Indians then] alums were prominent in the Worcester community

We lost our rival BC, and Colgate lost their rival Syracuse. We are well matched to be sports rivals, and I would like to it it develop!

Colgate and HC were the 2 independents "fighting above their weight" so to speak for much of the 50s, 60s and 70s playing in the "University Division" (today's FBS)...I think a football rivalry developed due to our being in the same circumstances etc. There were some tremendous games played between these 2 fine institutions in the 1980s.
