The Beanpot is an annual college hockey tournament among the Boston area colleges (BC, BU, Harvard, and Northeastern). It's a pretty big deal in the local sports scene and is basically a guaranteed sell out at the Garden..
To me, this dampens the sports optimism generated by word that hockey was going to start Thursday. Cancelling games scheduled 3 months from now is concerning

This had to happen, because Harvard canceled their season.
Beanpot was great last February. Largest crowd in Beanpot history.

Someone was expecting HC to substitute for Hahvahd? Merrimack, UMass Lowell and Providence are all roughly as close to Boston as HC and might be abler substitutes, unfortunately. Regarding the tournament being ovahrated, since HC isn't invited, I have kinda felt the same way but it actually is quite a proving ground for national success because since the NCAA hockey tournament began, Beanpot participants have won ten national titles and all of those championship teams won the Beanpot first that year. During the blizzard of 1978 many fans were stuck in Boston Garden for several days after watching the Beanpot when Governor Dukakis shut the State down for a week. They must have got tired of eating hot dogs. Since the Beanpot began in 1952, every final has included either BC or BU. Harvard and Northeastern have never played each other in the final.

Just replace Harvard with Providence or UMass-Lowell and call it the Hockey East Tournament.

“Then Governor Dukakis shut the State down for a week. They must have got tired of eating hot dogs.”
Not being a major hockey fan and certainly not following Boston area college hockey, do they sell Boston baked beans as well as hot dogs at that tournament so those storm survivors also had beans to subsist on?

Aside from Harvard not playing ice hockey this year, there would be no fans, and most importantly, there was little in the way of $$$ for broadcast rights. You can bet your sweet bippy if ESPN or NBC Sports etc was paying $1 million for rights, there would be a Beanpot with a fourth team substituting for Harvard.

It doesn't seem to make any sense that they couldn't slot some other school in and play at on campus sites. I would think that NESN would pay "something" to broadcast it. If it turns out that there isn't college hockey by February, it could be easily canceled without any real expense.
I wonder if somebody (Harvard or the Garden, perhaps) has a veto right over such an arrangement. That is the only thing that makes sense. The announcement of the cancellation describes the event as "TD Garden’s annual college hockey tournament," so I suspect that the Garden might "own" the tournament.

An HC invite to the Beanpot would have been quite interesting. As Longsuffering mentioned, Lowell and Merrimack would still fit the Massachusetts bill.
The Beanpot, producing so many future national champions and NCAA tournament teams, is not overrated as a whole. There have been, however, many down years in which several of the teams have not been competitive. Nonetheless, many of those contests are still hotly contested with local bragging rights on the line. To some, winning the Beanpot is just as important as winning the conference, tournament, etc.
