An awful thing to see, instantly recalling the Hank Gathers tragedy thirty years ago.

So why not find out what happened to the guy before making all these Covid related assumptions?

So why not find out what happened to the guy before making all these Covid related assumptions? No doubt, the facts will come out in time. But it's not an unreasonable assumption:
- Hank Gathers is immediately cited, but that was 30 years ago. These events are (thankfully) exceedingly rare. - Johnson is known to have tested positive for COVID a few months ago.
So, this isn't some wild-@ss theory. Occam's Razor applies. But I'll hang around and wait for hcpride to remind us that Covid doesn't have any impact on young people, or for Sons of Vaval to argue that anyone with pre-existing conditions needs to lock themselves away at home so he can get back to living his best life.

Rare - but not as rare as some may think. On average, there are 10+ per year. But most are high schoolers or D2/D3/juco players. And most occur in practice or workouts. So there is little publicity. A CNN study a few years ago found about 11 “indirect” deaths per year from football alone, where Indirect” refers to systemic fatalities that occur due to exertion or secondary complications. A couple notable deaths that are more recent than Gathers are Pete Maravich and Reggie Lewis. Also much more recently, that Maryland football player. But the great majority of those who died received little publicity and weren’t well known. Edit: Maravich's death during a pickup game, from a congenital heart defect, was actually a year or two before Gather's death.

More recently today, he had a Face Time talk with his teammates.

Zeke Upshaw, who played at Hofstra, dropped dead during play in the NBA G League about 2 years ago. Film of that event is very similar. I forget the specific heart ailment that was eventually identified.

Nice. Beyond that (for those who gather facts before jumping to conclusions), It's unclear if Johnson's condition is connected to COVID-19, or if he had previously tested positive. Florida had to pause team activities last month because of positive COVID-19 tests, and coach Mike White said the team also had previous issues, but details were not released because of privacy laws.
DeJarnett [his grandfather] told USA TODAY Sports he did not know whether Johnson ever suffered from the virus.
"I know that there was some of the times when some of the team was quarantined, yes,” DeJarnett said. “I don’t know if he was one of them or not.”

The most common cause of acute myocarditis is a viral infection. Numerous viruses can cause the infection that leads to this condition, COVID being the latest.
Severe arrhythmias can occur, and these can result in fainting.
Many people have had myocarditis without knowing they had it.
