In trying to find videos from the good old days (want to find ECAC Game of the Week matchups!) I stumbled across this Big East, er...non conference tilt between HC and PC in December 1988:

Holy Cross has only played Providence nine games in the 32 years since that 1988 tilt with Friars visiting the Hart just once more in 1991. The two old rivals have played 71 games with PC leading the series 43-28.

Amazing how crappy bleachers are not a problem when they are full.

Was a providence production.....Interestingly enough, can't find the HC wins in 87 or 90.

Amazing how the game has evolved the 3 point shot was an afterthought and not a factor in that game.

IIRC both of those games demonstrated that the efficiency that HC had demonstrated handling frequent Hart Center sellouts had long since been forgotten.
Notice how the fans were 50% PC for sure. Part of it was the students were gone, they did support the team more back then.

Sounds like the same Hart PA announcer we have today. Am I right?

I shared it with Glenn Williams and Dwight Pernell-first thing they said is where is the game from 87?

The play by play is handled by long time Celtic play by play man, MIke Gorman..He still does the C's games on NBCSports, the Celts flagship station

He led Assumption on several NCAA D-2 deep runs and then went on to be the Director of the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield if I am remembering correctly.

The radio banner on the scorer's table is WNEB 1230-AM. That 1230 space is now occupied by a Catholic Radio station with the same puny signal, which would have been hard to hear anywhere outside the Worcester city limits after dark. The game would have also been carried by PC's longtime flagship station WPRO 630-AM, which can be heard by millions in Southern New England. HC BB never had a long term consistent relationship with a strong radio station, never mind a network TV station like PC did for decades. Worcester itself never had a network TV station. It makes the fan base HC did build even more impressive.

In the WNEB days if I wanted to listen to a football game (which were 1 or 2 a year; the rest I went to), I had to be no further east than Westborough to hear it. The Princeton miracle nearly resulted in me driving off Rt 9.
The only thing that station had going for it was that there were no contractual arrangements with other teams that pre-empted HC coverage.

^ Not unique to WNEB. HC FB and MBB has trumped all other programming on WEEI 1440AM for the past 5 years as well.

If anyone is both an HC and Celtics fan and enjoys heartbreak, both a Maryland game featuring Len Bias and the 2002 HC-Kansas NCAA game links are located further down the YouTube page as this game.

A few quick thoughts on the game..... HC is a fast quick team..Very explosive to the hoop, we haven't seen that type of player in quite a while! Pernell and Williams were a great backcourt.
HC attacks the glass on both ends..Every HC player puts a body on somebody all the time.
Interesting how few 3's there are in the game, even Scooter doesn't take many in comparison to todays game..
Both teams played great D...and HC changing from the 2-2-1 zone press back to their M2M....Providence used their zone press quite well....We don't see much of that any more...
HC runs a lot of sets that have catch and shoot options, and HC players don't hesitate getting their shots off...
I'm sure hoping HC can get back to this level of play! So much energy, all the time!

....that ended up being a very disappointing year, which none of us knew at the time. Tropf was injured a lot (like AVB, back, IIRC); he and Williams were the glue of that senior class (Evans, Fedina, Viviano, Martucci). The next season was a lot better!
88-89 was the start of a nice 3 or 4 year win streak against BC!

It makes the fan base HC did build even more impressive. HC football and basketball had a nice run on WTAG 580 AM and I think they had a very strong signal. I can recall listening to many games on TAG with Bob Gamere and later Maynard Allen providing the call. When interest in HC Hoops plummeted in the Eighties, the WTAG relationship went by the boards.

Channel 27 was very strong and carried (primarily) HC hoop live and football (albeit tape-delayed) that could be seen in Eastern Massachusetts in the 1970s....HC lost a lot of fan following (TV-wise) with the rise of ESPN/cable...

In the 70’s - 94 I listened to about 90% of the games on my phone by calling WTAG and having them leave the line open so I could listen. They were wonderful and kind- at first they laughed but I would send pizza to the staff weekly in gratitude
