Dear Students,
I am sorry to interrupt your Christmas Day, but I wanted to share with you that I just received notification last night from the Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Massachusetts Secretary of Education that all institutions of higher education in Massachusetts should refrain from bringing any students back to campus until Monday, January 18, 2021. Their guidance exempts students currently residing on campus or those with nowhere else to go.
This clearly has many implications for students in January Term and students who had been scheduled to return to campus prior to January 18, including RAs, Kimball captains and some athletic teams. We are not yet sure at this time how this impacts our full move-in schedule as we need to stagger arrivals in order to arrange a move-in process in alignment with the best health and safety protocols.
Please know that we still plan to invite students back to campus - we will just need to re-think the arrival schedule.
I ask for your patience as we re-work that schedule over the coming days. We will be back in touch on Monday, December 28 with a further update on January Term classes, the move-in schedule previously announced, and all other issues implicated by this announcement from the state.
I wish you and your family a Merry and safe Christmas. And let us all pray for patience, hope and deep care for the most vulnerable in these challenging days.
Sincerely,
Philip L. Boroughs, S.J.
President

My friend who has a daughter who is a freshman at HC says his daughter is scheduled to move in Jan 23. I wouldn’t bet a lot of money on that actually happening but that’s the plan. This friend was firmly in the “no way I’m paying for another virtual semester at HC prices” camp. We shall see.

Yesterday I talked to an ROTC senior who is commuting from RI twice a week this month to complete a physics lab. He plans to return to the campus in late January to participate in naval orientation for approx 20 freshmen, 12 from HC

IIRC, ADMB in the podcast indicated student athletes, not already in Worcester, would be returning around Jan. 18th, and that was being factored into schedules.

^^^Kimball dining rules ^^^Welcome back to campus. There may be several student athletes in this one. Holy Cross did nearly a thousand tests on Saturday. Two students and two staff tested positive. Between Jan 18th and Jan 22nd, ten students and two staff tested positive. Most, if not all, these student positives are very likely returning student athletes. As of Jan. 24, HC is at 9 percent of its isolation capacity, and at 7 percent of its quarantine capacity. Yes, the college is measuring this. Thus, the dashboard light for both metrics is green, meaning plenty of capacity to spare. Through Jan 23, 53 student cases (HC tested only), 41 employee cases (staff), one other case (HC tested), probably a contractor working on campus (but not a construction worker).

Very nice to see students streaming in and out of the new rec center (I really don't like to call it "The Jo") on the webcam. That's the good news. The bad news is the reason they are going in is not to recreate but to be tested for covid.
