Expectations from coaches/SIDS are low.

Imagine how the Middies must feel.

Imagine how the Middies must feel. Navy had a ton of defections from last year's team. Many may be related to them firing long-time coach Stefanie Pemper at the end of last season. Somewhat offsetting that is getting back Jennifer Coleman, who was academically ineligible second semester last year and, I think, first semester this year. She could end up as a 1st team All-PL player.

It's always been a rebuilding year for this team since last year's graduates moved on (plus Faulkner now) - that's Manis, Swords, Smith, Pedi and Morris all gone. Avery and Oluchi are the only players with any significant experience. If Murphy is still hobbled, at least two of the frosh will have to be 'instant coffee' (from Dickie V) if we are to have any success. The only saving grace is that Colgate and Army are also projected to be second tier teams.

Her first name is ‘Avery’ and we all know she’s the straw that stirs the drink for this team

I don't remember Murphy being hobbled but Demski sat out the entire year. Avery Labarbera is a decent player but not one of the top five in the PL IMHO. I will watch them as always with low expectations.

. Avery Labarbera is a decent player but not one of the top five in the PL IMHO. I will watch them as always with low expectations. I watched a lot of PL women's games the past two years, and I think Labarbera is definitely in the top five of returnees. The only other player who might be in that category is Navy's Jennifer Coleman, who sat much of last year with academic problems but was very good as a freshman in 2018-19. There are a couple others who were clearly not as good as Labarbera last year but who might close the gap, specifically Boston U's Maggie Pina and Army's Alisa Fallon. Pina was pretty one-dimensional last year as a freshman however.

Respectfully, disagree.

I think of Avery as the Tony Fauci of HC WBB: a small Italian Dynamo. The preseason all star team is so PL: four guards and a forward. It is hard to judge how the absence of Lauren Manis will effect Avery's production. It could increase it if Avery gets many of Lauren's shots, but who else will defenses have to worry about? She could get double teamed regularly.

Careful, it sounds almost as though the other four players will not be able to score. If she is double teamed, won't that mean someone else could be open?

. The preseason all star team is so PL: four guards and a forward. Like most all-league teams, the selectors are supposed to choose the five top players. This year's team happens to have two PG's, two SF's who are classified as guards by their team, and one center. Last year's All-PL team had three PF/C's. The 2018-19 team, which had six players due to a tie, consisted of five PF/C's and one SF. So choosing mostly guards is definitely not something that happens every year.

Would you agree that Avery is the only one of the returnees who can "create her own shot" as the sports yakkers say these days? The newcomers are a box of chocolates. We could have a couple more who can do that.

Perhaps, but that is where the Xs and Os come in. If we have plays ghat work, they may not need to create their own shot that often. We'll see.

Coach Nelson rightly had no final say in designing plays as a career assistant, but Coach Magarity certainly did and AD Blossom has a basketball background to break down tape of UNH games so we should be getting a good x and o coach.
Since BB has traditionally been the prime sport at HC, it should be an asset to have an AD who played college basketball like Marcus Blossom and Ron Perry, Sr. did. Maybe the Ron Perry Jr. promoters every time the AD position has been open were on to something.

Avery’s finishes among PL players as a Soph:
Assist-to-turnover ratio - 1st FT% - 1st MPG - 3rd PPG - 5th APG - 7th 3 pt % - 9th
It would be hard to believe she’s not one of the top 5 players in the league as a Junior.
