Gentlemen: Tomorrow is another Marian feast day and Holy Day of Obligation. I hope you can all participate in the celebration of the Eucharist in honor of the Blessed Virgin physically or virtually tomorrow. A Happy & Healthy New Year from this newly-minted rookie Purple Knight to the Crossports faithful wherever they may be.

No "obligation" here in the Newark Archdiocese in NJ. We'll be at Church to celebrate the day, but not because we are obliged to be there. ''

We will be there in person at our church in central NJ (Diocese of Metuchen) on Jan 1. Need that spiritual nourishment, especially in times like these. Will be back in plenty of time to catch the Citrus Bowl.

I say this without the slightest rancor, and mindful of course that HC is a Catholic college, but some of us posters (I am here assuming that I am not alone) no longer practice Catholicism. My Catholic credentials are pretty good: Catholic elementary school, high school, college, altar boy (starting when the Mass was in Latin), two aunts who are nuns. But I am divorced and remarried and not allowed to receive the Eucharist. It's pointless for me to detail my other issues with the Church, but I have ended up belonging to a large UCC (Congregational) church. I respect everyone's faith, but just wanted to give a nod to those posters who have gone in a different direction.

You are to be commended on finding another denomination that serves your family - I’m not in that camp but totally agree with those who find another church when the Catholic Church excludes you from the sacraments and full participation

UCC are good people. The Congregational Church in my town has a quality free community meal once a week that has been on a drive through basis since March. They are focused on Christian community service, not so much rules and regulations from what I can see.

Newfieguy: It has always been my habit to preface reminders to the Crosssports faithful (with the usual exception of Metuchenites, of course😉) that my remarks are addressed to those among us who remain practicing Catholics or, alternatively, those to whom such matters continue to matter. It appears that out of laziness in these, my later years, or due to simple absent-mindedness, I have failed to do so in my post prior to this latest Marian Holy Day of Obligation. A heartfelt mea culpa to you or any brother Crusader who may have taken offense at the omission. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Pax vobis.

What does Metuchen mean? I had no idea so I looked it up and found out that it is an oblique reference to princetoncrusader's post!
the name “Metuchen” is a 1720 letter stating that “MeTochen is called from ye name of ye chief of this place and meanth 'slowe-dog' for that chief is lame and goeth slowly.” However, this tiny borough in Middlesex County, NJ, also has a more cultured name than “slow dog”; the Brainy Borough.

Although HC is a Catholic school not all of its students are Catholic, and many of its graduates who started as Catholic (including me) no longer practice Catholicism, for a variety of reasons. Speaking only for myself I'd prefer that religion was served in small doses on Crossports. Also, you addressed your post to "Gentlemen". Perhaps there are no women on Crossports; I have no idea, but hopefully the door is open. Crossports seems pretty welcoming and hopefully it feels that way to all members of the HC community and other interested parties.

If someone started a thread on Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, or Methodism on this board I'd just ignore it. If I visited the Brigham Young University thread I'd not be surprised to see a thread or multiple threads on the LDS Church.

They are focused on Christian community service, not so much rules and regulations from what I can see. We have a nice UCC church in my town as well. They are very focused on serving the community and the minister is a wonderful woman. I have been to a few funerals there which were beautiful and have had the opportunity to speak from the pulpit a couple of times on behalf of a social service non profit on whose board I served. Once I talked about liberation theology and the preferential option for the poor as expressed in the Gospel. They were welcoming and several congregants spoke to me after the service about that topic. I made a pitch for HC and the Jesuit mantra of educating people for others as I do whenever I get the chance. I don't have a problem with brief discussions of religion here. Obviously, if they get too involved, they won't be germane to the "other HC stuff" thread.
