As it was "unspecialized" football in those days, a lot of teams didn't have a decent kicker. Otherwise, they'd have tried to win the game with a field goal. They were at the 20 when the interception occurred.

Right, I forgot up until the late 1950's, most guys played both ways. Teams definitely weren't recruiting kicking specialists then. You basically just figured out who on your team happened to be the best at place-kicking and/or punting, and rolled with that.
