I hope BU wears masks tmro and we don’t - maybe AOC called her alma mater with this stunt Seriously, isn’t it true that all of our players have proof of a negative test in the last 48 hours ? A negative test 48 hours ago means very little if nothing, with regard to your status today. I have no problem with the mask thing. It means something. Definitely not perfect but also not nothing. You’ll eliminate some risk but not all of it.

I put in a call to the BU coach, claiming that I was with the CDC. I suggested that BU players should wear the masks on offense but not on defense. He seemed amenable to that directive. That may help us score some baskets in transition as the BU players fumble with donning the masks. Stay tuned. Call 'em back and push the gloves notion. And spraying the ball between passes. Not to mention the social distancing on offense and defense. See if he buys it...maybe he is one of those goofy 'err on the safe siders'.

If the rest of college basketball isn't doing this, we should not be unless there is some state/city ordinance.

With 3,110 new cases and 105 additional deaths on Sunday alone in MA, be lucky if anyone plays with masks or otherwise much longer in the state. Baker is speaking today at 12:30p with an update and on any further tightening of restrictions.

One advantage for players wearing masks: they can mouth expletives at the refs all game and not get T'd up.

The HC/Vermont Women’s Hockey game this past weekend, both teams wore masks on the ice during the game competition. In the pictures below are the games against UVM and UNH this past week. The basketball teams have been practicing while wearing a mask for the last two months. Wearing a mask at this point should not affect performance. The teams are use to it. If the Women can compete in Hockey, surely the Men can play basketball wearing masks. Sheesh! Not sure why people are getting their pants in a bunch. You guys aren’t on the floor at the Hart today, or at Case on Tuesday.

Has anyone watched a BC home basketball game? I have not Maybe this is some sort of compromise to get an OK from the state and/or city to get an OK to get the games in I've seen some of the Home BC games, no masks..

One positive with masks, the refs won't know who is yelling at them!

BC is is Newton, BU is is Boston. Not necessarily the same as far as city restrictions go.

as an epidemiologist by training, mandating that masks be worn in competitive games is asinine.
the reduction in transmission of a viruses with most conventional masks (save N95 and better) is debatable in general, but in a sport like basketball in which there is such high exertion/heavy breathing/physical content the reduction is likely to be very low and the interference with performance is high.
not a fan of this decision.

Do BU hockey teams wear masks for games ? BU Men's Hockey has not played a game this season. The BU Women's Hockey program has played three games at UNH (2x) and at UConn while not playing a game since December 11th so they have not had a home game. It has been 50/50 in Women's Hockey East play on masks vs no masks.

i'm not a betting man, but i like hc at +10.5 today.
i honestly think the masks issue is worth at least a few points, especially if we push the pace (within reason) the way nelson seems to want. this pretty clearly has a detriment to performance in a sport like basketball.
very excited for this game. lots of new faces, and at last, hc basketball is upon us!

BU has their masks guarding their goatees, but not much over their mouths and noses. Must be more of an administration decision than the players appreciating any real or perceived benefit.

Do masks work when being worn as a chinstrap?

From the way they are wearing the masks, their chins are well protected.

The only thing BU has accomplished with its mandate is showing that its masks make attractive neck warmers.

unless you're watching the women play, not sure what we can say about the mandate. It is in place at B.U only. We'll have to see tomorrow if the rule is enforced
There are differing opinions here about the mandate to wear masks.
I will go on record here: No matter what you think about the need to wear a mask during the game, the idea of having a rule and not enforcing it is silly. If you say everyone has to wear a mask, fine - but make people actually wear it. In my opinion there is no value in making a rule you need to wear masks and then allowing people to wear it like a chin strap. Better to have never made the rule in the first place

Yeah, no reason to have a rule if you aren't going to enforce it.

It looked like BU was implementing a gradual mask up. Today the chins tomorrow the mouths and Wednesday the mouth and noses. Thursday the foreheads. Or something like that

At the start of the ladies game, I counted 4 Terrier exposed noses and 1 Terrier exposed mouth (#33, with the classic "chin diaper" look). Our players did a better job of complying than theirs. Go figure.

Go figure. It did seem like our women were actually wearing their masks and leaving them alone. The BU women had them all over the place. Definitely not preventing anything and maybe making it worse with the constant touching of the masks and having them not covering mouth and nose.
