Not sure if anybody mentioned it specifically but that Butler rebound at the end in the middle of multiple BU players was a “I’m so sick of losing there’s no way anyone else is getting this ball” rebound. Love that guy.

If Nelson continues to just drop the ball into Gates, many of the opposing coaches who can actually coach, will reduce his effectiveness-- Gates is a great presence in the PL, but he is a low block player that needs both player and ball movement to be most effective-today when Nelson was watching and not coaching (I thought I was watching the NBA ) we dumped and watched much like last year with Pridgen.
This team is shooting the ball much better than last season..When teams double Gates, he will kick it out to a shooter (Austin, Justin etc.)..He is a tough match-up, and this season it appears there are weapons this season that were not in play last year....BU saw what Gate did Monday, and still could not handle him...

After 2 games RJ has been terrific on both ends and what is needed for this team! We won and for that we are all happy and the prospects for the future are bright!!! Gates is a match up problem for most, but standing next to Butler he appears just a bit taller so I call him 6 ‘5” and a brute If Nelson continues to just drop the ball into Gates, many of the opposing coaches who can actually coach, will reduce his effectiveness-- Gates is a great presence in the PL, but he is a low block player that needs both player and ball movement to be most effective-today when Nelson was watching and not coaching (I thought I was watching the NBA ) we dumped and watched much like last year with Pridgen. Nelson’s offense created opportunities for Gates to get the ball where he can score from. He worked hard for position and often did not receive the ball when he was open. I disagree with your estimation of the coach after these two games. He is still searching for the best rotation and made the difficult decision to sub Wade for Faw. It was far from perfect, but worked out in the end. .Nelson gave them the chance to win. And they did. If he is to be blamed, rightfully so, for the record last season, he deserves some credit for the strong play these last two days. As I said He gave the appearance he was subbing by the clock and to give players meaningful minutes, and for this early in the season, that possibly works for me, Nobody suggested it wasn't a good/great win, but if we lost this board would have had comments about the use of time outs and substitution combinations -fairly or unfairly I do think like yesterday from about the 10 minute mark, he watched the game more than he coached. Since this is an opinion board each of us can be right or wrong, it just depends on the lens we are using to watch the game. In this case I could be way off, but that is what I saw. We have real potential with this group, and Nelson has the potential to become a good/very good coach, but both need to grow Happy to discuss offline

Briefly rewatched the second half just now, noted that at the 5:54 mark in the second half the score was 62-60 BU. In the last 6 minutes they were held to just 4 points, with their last score coming around the 1:13 mark. Albeit the Crusaders only scored 8 points in that last stretch, 4 points in 6 minutes is a very drastic difference from last year when BU gave the HC defense fits down the stretch both times they met, especially at the Hart. I assume everyone noticed this improvement, just wanted to leave the numbers out there.

We looked prepared. Party because of playing same team back to back, but also looked like we were drilled and had them scouted correctly.

In every way we are grateful for the NCAA’s decision to let all transfers to play immediately. Without Gerrale we would have gotten blown out twice

As Mr. E would say, these games this season will the 77th, 78th, 79th, 80th, 81st and 82nd meeting(s) ever between these fine institutions. And, as Johnny Most would have chimed in, it might get nasty out there with all that familiarity. Think of it, it's theoretically possible that they play them a 7th time too. An entire 7 game NBA playoff series. Holy Cross has never lost a seven game series.

Also If he wasn’t coaching for extended periods of time in both games, but the team is 1-1 with strong performances in 3 of 4 halves, you must agree that when he is coaching, Nelson is a significantly better coach than Joe Jones.

Assuming the PL goes along with what kot1972 pointed out, that would still leave him one year of eligibility. Where he uses it is up to him and where he stands academically in terms of credits accepted from UNO at HC and his accompanying progression toward his BA/BS from HC.

Captain Obvious: It was nice to see big defensive stops down the stretch It seems as though the HC defenders have gotten much quicker in their lateral movement...Getting in much better position to defend. it's early, but still the team looks so much more comfortable on D... I just wish they would run and jump from the back side rather than the front....

Where he uses it is up to him and where he stands academically in terms of credits accepted from UNO at HC and his accompanying progression toward his BA/BS from HC. My guess is that the original plan was for him to attend HC for 3 years and play 2. I don't think HC would be looking for a transfer to come, sit for a year, play for a year, then graduate and play a year someplace else. In this scenario it is kind of assumed there are enough credits lost in the transfer that it takes 3 years to finish your undergrad work even with two years someplace else under your belt. For old people think Jimmy McCaffery or Josh Sankes The fact that in this topsy turvy world of COVID the NCAA says no waiting a year after transfer and COVID basketball doesn't count against eligibility is just a gift for Gates and HC

Gates, Butler help Holy Cross fend off Boston University Telegram & Gazette Staff
Austin Butler, shown hitting a layup in Monday's season opener against Boston University, had 18 points for the Crusaders in a win over the Terriers on Tuesday. It may be just two games, but it's certain that the Holy Cross men's basketball team has a much different outlook this season.
After falling short in a tough season-opening loss to Boston University on Monday, the Crusaders continued to display tenacious defense and hustle that paid off with a 68-66 win over the Terriers on Tuesday at Case Gymnasium. Holy Cross (1-1, 1-1 Patriot League) had four players score in double figures, as Gerrale Gates had 19 points and Austin Butler added 18 points for the Crusaders. Gates and Butler each added seven rebounds.
Former Worcester Academy star Judson Martindale scored 16 for the Crusaders on six of eight shooting and Matt Faw chipped in 13 points and six boards.
Holy Cross had won just three games last season, ending the year on a 12-game losing streak. It was the first win for the Crusaders since a 96-95 overtime win over Lehigh on January 22. Holy Cross freshmen guard Judson Martindale had 16 points for the Crusaders on six of eight shooting on Tuesday. Holy Cross defended well, holding BU's Daman Tate to just one field goal on seven attempts. Tate scored 26 points in Monday's opener.
Holy Cross had to work to close this one out. Butler drove the lane with less than three minutes left to put the Crusaders up, 65-64. On HC's next possession, freshman R.J. Johnson found Gates inside for a layup to make it 67-64 with 1:41 left.
After a Terriers bucket, Johnson made a good move to get in for a layup with 42 seconds remaining, but his shot didn't fall, leaving the score 67-66 as Boston University (1-1, 1-1) took a timeout with 39 seconds left. BU's Javante McCoy received the ball at the top of the 3-point line and was looking for an open teammate down low, but his pass was stolen by Gates in the paint, forcing the Terriers to foul with 19 seconds left.
Martindale missed the front half of his free throws and Boston University was able to get the rebound and call timeout with 13 seconds left. The Terriers (1-1, 1-1) tried to work the ball underneath to take the lead, but Butler played great defense, avoiding a few head fakes, blocking a shot and corralling the loose ball before drawing a foul with four seconds left. Butler made one of two shots and BU took a 68-66 lead with three seconds left.
Boston University had a final chance to get the win, but McCoy's 3-pointer from just over midcourt fell short. The Terriers were just 3 for 14 from 3-point range in the second half.
McCoy finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Jack Hemphill scored 16 points for BU.
The teams traded leads throughout the first half until the Terriers went on a 15-4 run. to take a 31-26 advantage. However the Crusaders closed out the half with a three-point play from Gates, then a jumper by Gates just before the buzzer to give Holy Cross the lead at the break, 38-37.
The Crusaders stayed hot to start the second half, going on a 14-5 run to make it 52-42 with 13:46 left. BU answered with a 14-4 run to tie it with 8:54 left.
Holy Cross will host Army at 3 p.m. Saturday in the first game of a home-and-home with the Black Knights.
