As long as BC is playing FCS opponents we should be playing them every year and one other FBS school. Very simple. BC vs Colgate is stupid for BC.

I guess as long as Colgate football is willing to be smacked around near Boston, both can agree to it. It doesn't seem to really matter much to BC what FCS team is willing to come in, burn the clock, avoid injury, pick up a check, and go home. Just look at their FCS opponents the last ten years.

Those type of games (BC) should rotate (BC, UConn, Umass, Army, someone else) otherwise they will cease to become events and simply annual beatings like 1982-86. No thanks.

But it's great for Colgate, just as it's great they lined up Stanford down the road. Would you rather see Colgate play Catholic University?

For BC, as long as they get bowl credit to play an FCS school, HC is the better choice for many reasons. If we play only one FBS school per year, I’d favor playing BC every other year. If two, every year. Just my opinion.

Playing devils advocate -- was it "stupid" for Syracuse to play Holy Cross last year? By your logic, The Orange should play Colgate every year. I do generally agree with you that HC and BC should make sure to play each other annually in M/W Basketball, Men's Hockey and Baseball with a football game happening at minimum one every 4 years. BC does for the most part rotate through all the local New England FCS teams (+ UMASS which is basically FCS). I guess Colgate is kind of local and has a large alum contingency in Boston.

I really can’t comment since I’m not familiar with the level of interest Colgate and Syracuse fans have about that series, if any at all. I suspect for Syracuse a win is a win, and they probably figure attendance will be poor no matter what FCS opponent they put on the chopping block.
What I do know is that the HC/BC game is a unique geographical alumni event between two schools that share a lot of history outside of football. I also know that it’s a great opportunity for BC to actually sell some tickets to their FCS game, what is ordinarily an afterthought amongst the local fan base up here.
However, I do like that HC is scheduling different FBS opponents and I wouldn’t want BC to be HC’s only FBS game. As I said, every other year is good, unless we plan to play multiple FBS in a season, in which case it should be our opening game annually.
I also believe if Chesney sticks around long enough and we keep showing up, there will be closer games and eventually a victory against an FBS team. The last time we played BC it was a set-up for disaster. New coach, new system, new QB, good BC team, etc.

Full stadium, probably 10K in purple if not more. Note over time if we them every year or even every other year in Chestnut Hill, the excitement will wear off a little. Remember this was the first HC-BC game in 32 years. We may never beat BC again in football but I do believe Chesney will get an FBS scalp. UConn is this coming fall, right? Or maybe we'll get lucky and Buffalo will have down season when we head there. After an awful first decade in I-A/FBS, they've been much stronger of late.

HC leads in rebounds 21-16. Colgate has 5 steals - HC has none. Tied in possessions at 34 each. HC leads in second chance points 6-2. Colgate leads in points in the paint (18-12). HC has 7 turnovers to only 2 for Colgate
Gates = 16 points / 6 rebounds Johnson = 4 points / 3 assists Butler = 5 points / 2 reb / 1 asst Martindale = 5 points / 2 reb /1 asst / 1 block Faw = 0 points BUT 7 rebounds and 4 blocks

NY - not sure. Because of how close BC is to HC and to many HC alumni, I have a feeling attendance would be solid annually and biannually, especially if marketed well, and of course if we had a fighting chance to win.
By the way, do we actually have them on our schedule in an upcoming year or is this just rumor?

There may have been some talks about rescheduling the 2020 game in some upcoming year.....I am not privy to such info. I think playing BC should be on some sort of rotating basis but not too rare....once every 2-3 or so years seems about right. Right now we have 10 games scheduled (for this Fall)....BC by adding Gate now has their full 12 game schedule.

Personally I'd rather see us smacked around in a wholly one-sided exhibition by Ohio State or University of Florida. At least then there are no sad memories like 40 years ago we beat these guys and now look at us, etc. I did notice we are so far off the BC radar screen this century they took no delight in the beatdown (in fact, the coach took pity and kept his scoring down to 62-14). There might be a benefit recruit-wise in spreading our FBS games outside our region, a benefit player development-wise in finding FBS games in which we have better odds of keeping it close, and limiting the BC game to once a decade or thereabouts.

Prior to the games in the 80s, they had not played since the 60s. Believe it or not, the all time series is tied, 31 wins apiece.

But from that timeframe in the early 60's it was an annual thing and kind of a big deal. Just using your Mr E stat, they had their 62nd meeting in the early 60's. Either that rivalry went a ways into the 19th century, or at that time it was an annual thing throughout the 20th century.
When HC stopped playing BC, a Colgate grad from sometime in the 50's told me that Syracuse/Colgate did the exact same thing, but had recently started playing an occasional game again and predicted HC and BC would do the same thing. Tim's post showing a few games in the 80's and 60 or so up until some time in the 60's corroborates my recollection of a conversation from 1986

Yeah, I was corroborating your post. The only thing I was surprised at was that they played those 3 games in the 80s.

By the way, what happened to the Army game that was supposed to happen in 22 or 23?
Probably been discussed here, but I've forgotten the conversation.
Disappointing.

1. What was the original Merrimack contract- one in N.Andover and one in Worcester (which year)? 2. Saw the MC roster- one of their players is the son of Peter McCarty, who coached here quite a while.

According to one of those websites that shows schedules 10 years out, no sign of an Army-Holy Cross game any time soon. I believe Dartmouth has a game at West Point in '22 or '23. The good news is there's still a chance something could open up. Unlike Navy, who really only has one "open" game a year, Army is an independent. And, like Navy, they've shown a willingness to play a PL team -- occasionally two -- almost every year since we went scholarship. So nothing concrete yet but wouldn't surprise me to see a game at Michie sometime this decade.

I believe it was Syracuse's second FCS game on the schedule that year -- you're only allowed to count one FCS win towards bowl eligibility regardless of equivalencies. So the Orange lost nothing by playing Colgate -- even if they scheduled JMU or Montana in that slot, the win wouldn't have counted. Crazy that series is tied. Colgate should refuse to play them ever again Speaking of that rivalry, I think Syracuse is approaching 60 straight basketball wins over Colgate. If the Red Raiders are ever going to break that streak, one would think their current team might be the one to have a fighting chance -- of course no non-conference games though. Oh well -- they'll have to hope to win the PL and bank on the prospect of the NCAA seeding hyper-regionally this year due to COVID.
