HC grad Peter Newsham, former DC Police Chief, fortunately left that post January 2, 2021 to become Chief in Prince William County, Virginia starting in February 2021. Fortunate for him he was not still holding his former job when the events of Wednesday, January 6, 2021 took place.

Fortunate for him he was not still holding his former job when the events of Wednesday, January 6, 2021 took place. Good move. Anyone involved is tarnished. I visited DC in 1997. I couldn't believe how much security from so many agencies and forces there was. That was before 9/11. I am shocked at how security collapsed Wednesday at what they are calling the Citadel of our Democracy. The young woman would not have been shot if she had been prevented from entering.

I've been to DC a number of times in recent years as my daughter taught there for City Year and then had a research fellowship at NIH. I always figured the most important government buildings were unassailable. But I heard one congresswoman yesterday say that they rely in part on the willingness of the citizenry to comply with basic norms. We know now that this was a naive assumption.

Dean - keep an eye on this thread and the one a poster floated a UMass game cancelation to disguise his narrative.

And most tragic, a Capitol policeman who died today.

Isn't the police force that protects the Capital different from what Mr. Newsham was in charge of? Not that there wasn't an extreme deal of stress put upon him by all the other events that transpired in 2020.

Per Wikipedia, "The United States Capitol Police is a federal law enforcement agency in the United States charged with protecting the United States Congress within the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its territories. It answers to Congress, not the President of the United States, and is the only full-service federal law enforcement agency responsible to the legislative branch of the Federal Government of the United States." Note the use of "Capitol" with an "o" which refers to the Capitol Building, not the "Capital" (Wash DC) of the US.

Weren’t the DC Police also called in to assist the Capitol Police? I believe so according to the NY Times.

Probably to some degree, but no one's pointing the finger at them; vis-a-vis the Capitol police themselves, the head of which has already fallen on his sword.

Isn't the police force that protects the Capital different from what Mr. Newsham was in charge of? Not that there wasn't an extreme deal of stress put upon him by all the other events that transpired in 2020. There are multiple police forces in the District of Columbia. In the immediate vicinity of the Capitol, these police forces have jurisdiction. (1) the Capitol Police, 2,000 members, who have jurisdiction over the Capitol buildings and grounds. Until 2003, the Library of Congress had its own police force (100 members). The LoC police were merged into the Capitol police. (2) The Supreme Court, a different branch of government, has its own police, 148 members. (3) The Park Police has jurisdiction for the National Mall, at the foot of the capitol, over 2,300 members (not all are in DC, and are distinct from Park rangers). (4) The Federal Protective Service which protects any Federal buildings near the Capitol that are part of the Executive and Judicial branches of government. For example, the Thurgood Marshall building, part of the US court system, is proximate to the Capitol Grounds (5) AMTRAK police Union station, which is adjacent to the Capitol grounds. I don't believe there are any embassies nearby; if there were, the (6) Secret Service would have jurisdiction. If there was 'trouble' at an embassy, the State Department's (7) Diplomatic Security Service would be involved. And then there is the (8) FBI; and (9) ATF. If I count postal inspectors at the Main Post Office (next to Union Station, that's (10). Gallery protection officers at the National Gallery of Art, which abuts the Capitol Grounds, are (11). Leaving the police force of the District of Columbia (12), 3800 officers and 600 civilians. When the Venezuelan embassy (near Georgetown U.) was occupied by Americans several years ago, and the occupiers were then besieged by Venezuelan exile supporters of a rebel Venezuelan leader, the following police forces became involved: District of Columbia police, jurisdiction over the street; Park Police, jurisdiction over the parkland that abutted the embassy; Secret Service; Diplomatic Security Service SWAT teams (who came in from their Virginia base; they are usually deployed overseas when a US Embassy is besieged or occupied); and I think the FBI (SWAT teams) and ATF (bomb squad) was there as well.

The House and Senate Sergeants at Arms immediately fell on their swords and resigned. How big a force do they command and why were they lumped in with the Capitol police chief for direct blame?

To my knowledge, these offices do not have their own police force. The Capitol Police act under their direction. They may have staff that assist in protocol and ceremonial duties. The number of Capitol Police members is similar to that of the Atlanta GA police department.

Weren’t the DC Police also called in to assist the Capitol Police? I believe so according to the NY Times. The DC police were called to assist, and they cleared rioters from the outside terraces and stairs. Other neighboring jurisdictions sent their police, including several nearby counties, and Baltimore city. Virginia sent 200 state police. My understanding is that most, if not all of the outside police forces were deployed to patrol city streets. It seems likely that these other police forces will be deployed again during Jan 17-20, as the rioters have promised to return during this period. And its possible that officers from Chief Newsham's new department might be called in. I call them rioters because the mayor of District declared a riot was occurring, and this allowed the District to use certain powers and authorities.
