When your leading rebounder by a decent margin is also your shooting guard, you generally have a problem.

Of course, he is not an ordinary shooting guard....
But I agree on this--would love to see some big front court guys blocking out opponents and ripping down all the boards

I have to believe that this is the main job the staff has given to Gerrale. Many of Austin’s defensive rebounds have been when he is playing the power forward when Matt is on the bench, approximately half his 33 mpg.

Gates currently leads the conference in OR% (Butler ranks 10th). Butler is second in DR% (Gates is 16th).
Nationally, AB ranks 19th in DR/G - and 2nd in 3FG%.

I believe Butler is also top 15 somewhere in PPG

Very simply he is successful because rebounding requires positioning, commitment and execution

Our guards length may be a plus in the game...One way to slow down a good big is to pressure the ball and not allow easy passes to the big on the block..Force the ball as far away from the hoop as possible.. Our Defense has to play fast to take away the size Colgate has in it's frontcourt.Playing fast means making the 'Gate guards use a lot of time starting their offense....and we have the guard depth to facilitate this...

Colgate currently leads the nation in EFG%, and can hurt opponents inside and out. Still, if we have to give them something open, I'd rather it be beyond the arc. Just make them work hard and deep into the clock as often as possible.

When your leading rebounder by a decent margin is also your shooting guard, you generally have a problem. I agree with your point but there have been some guards who were outstanding rebounders on decent teams. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double in 1961-62 including 12.5 rebounds a game.

If the Big O walks through that door, we will be in business. I once sat at a bar and watched the women’s Final Four with him. I was literally the only person In the bar who knew who he was besides the guy he was with.

As a 15 yr. old in 1981, my dad, grandfather, and I were at the C's vs the San Diego Clippers the nite Dave Cowen's #18 was raised to the rafters. Before the game started when we got to our seats, my dad points to two guys in seats at the floor and says "go get those guys autographs!" I asked who they were, he says "just hurry up, I'll tell you when you get back, and make sure you get the guy on the left!" I go down, ask like a 15 yr old would, they said sure and were friendly. I hand them my program and a pen; guy on the right signs first - Dave Bing, then guy on the left signs with a simple "Big O", and both shake my extended hand. Will never forget it. A very special nite - for meeting Bing and the Big O, and it being the last sporting event the three of us attended together.

Terrific story. Thanks for posting. In November of 1963 Syracuse scrimmaged HC in the fieldhouse. To see Dave Bing dribble, pass, shoot, defend and rebound, all seemingly effortlessly, was such a treat for the three halves that were played. His unknown backcourt mate was a guy named Boeheim.

I was fortunate to have seen the Cincinnati Royals play with team members....The Big O, Jerry Lucas, Jack Twyman and Wayne Embry against the 76ers.
Does anyone remember the old NBA double header, when there were two games back to back in the same building with one admissions charge? If you were a kid, you may have also received a basketball with the admission price.
Man .... do I miss basketball, college and pro, from that era.

Surprised that you did not have the foresight to ask for his autograph on a bar menu that you could have sold years later to the highest bidder ... Might have covered college costs for some if not all of the kids!

As one of the early members of the NY Knicks fan club (President was named Marvin Aufrichtig- you may know him as Marv Albert), I attended some of those doubleheaders at the old MSG with my dad. Saw the Cooz a few times. Was my dad’s favorite. Old Garden had much better sight lines, even from the upper deck, than any newer arena I have been at. As do the old stadiums, Wrigley and Fenway, compared to the newer ones.

The Big O played recreational basketball at the YMCA in Cincinnati well into his 60's.

Remember the doubleheaders. Also the annual doubleheader during February vacation with the Celts and the Ice Follies (or was it Ice Capades). The Celts scored 173 points in one of those ice/hoop events. No three point rule and, believe it or not, no Bill Russell that day. www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/195902270BOS.htmlBy the way, that Laker named Steve Hamilton is the same guy that pitched for the Yankees.
